Man United signing this 24-year-old long-term Serie A target would help them return to their glory days

Man Utd Opinion: Why should United sign Savic from Lazio?

According to a report from Daily Star, Manchester United have revived the interest on their long-term target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The report also claims that United are keen on landing the Serbian midfielder, who is rated at £72m. Savic, who currently plays for Lazio, has also been linked with fellow Serie A side Juventus and Ligue 1 outfit PSG.

Savic’s rise to prominence in Serie A

The former Genk man has been an integral part of the Lazio since making a switch to Italy in 2015.

Savic started to make his presence feel in the 2017/18 campaign, racking up 14 goals and 7 assists followed by goal tally of 10 in the next season, where Lazio ended as the winners of Copa Italia.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old was named Serie A’s best midfielder last season for a string of match-winning displays. Though he was accustomed to the attacking midfield role at the beginning, Savic later switched to more central roles and still he kept his goal scoring rate intact.

Man United in need of midfield reinforcements

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the middle of major squad overhaul and reinforcing the midfield turns out to be a priority, given that Ander Herrera parted ways with the club and Paul Pogba’s future is up in the air.

And the latter one is strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford with Juventus and Real Madrid fighting for the transfer of the French World Cup star.

Pogba played a crucial role behind Solskjaer’s short-lived winning spree the last term and finding his replacement would definitely be a tedious task.

Meanwhile, there are options on the bench like Andreas Pereira, the Norwegian still wants some top-class addition, who can help United return to its glory days. With that being said, Savic would be the perfect option.

Despite experiencing many lows for his national team over the course, Savic is always a cut above when it comes to club football as he had made it to last two season’s Serie A team of the year.

As far as the previous season is concerned, Savic held a pass success percentage of around 80 with an average of 1.5 key passes and 2.5 attempted shots per game.

Meanwhile, he also averaged 3.6 aerial won per game with 1.4 tackles, which manifests the archetype of a perfect central-midfielder.

Final Verdict

United have made two fantastic signings namely Daniel James and Aaron-Wan Bissaka, whilst Solskjaer is looking to bring more young talents.

Savic should be the priority on the list and also with whom the Norwegian manager can raise the stakes in the forthcoming Premier League campaign.
