Man United signing this world-class PL star would be a huge statement of intent ahead of a crucial season

Manchester United Opinion: Should Solskjaer sign Christian Eriksen?

According to the Daily Mirror, Tottenham star Christian Eriksen is considering a move to Manchester United after Real Madrid seemingly pulled the plug on a transfer.

The Denmark international, 27, had his heart set on a dream move to Real Madrid this summer but the Spanish giants have decided against pursuing the playmaker (h/t Daily Mirror).

Eriksen revealed he wants a new challenge earlier this month as he has shown reluctance to put pen to paper on a new deal. He has just 12 months left on his current deal and while there is still a chance he could extend his contract at Tottenham, the Dane could be open to a move to Manchester United.

However, Manchester United will face competition from Juventus, who are rebuilding their squad chiefly to win the Champions League next term, the report adds. Keeping that in mind, should United beat Juventus to the signature of Eriksen?

Without a shadow of doubt, yes! Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to steer the Red Devils back to the top of the Premier League table. It has been six long years since the club won the Premier League title, with Jose Mourinho guiding the club to the best finish after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Solskjaer, who replaced Mourinho in December as an interim manager, oversaw a drastic turnaround in the club’s fortunes but ended the season with just two wins from 12 games and missed out on a top-four finish and Champions League football.

United have been slow movers in the ongoing summer transfer window, with the club having only signed Daniel James from Swansea City. While Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is claimed to be on the brink of a move to Old Trafford, Solskjaer needs a few more new faces if he is to challenge for trophies next season.

And the Red Devils could do well to add some creativity and flair to their current attack after the players struggled to score goals on a consistent basis last term.

The team was heavily dependent on Paul Pogba for creativity and goals but that must change next term. Whether Pogba stays or leaves, Solskjaer needs another source of invention from the midfield and Christian Eriksen would be a brilliant fit.

Eriksen is considered as one of the best playmakers across Europe and played a key role in guiding Spurs to the Champions League final last season.

The Dane is a technically gifted player, who is excellent at finding pockets of spaces, threading through balls and supplying devilish crosses into the box. He is dangerous from set-piece situations and his work rate makes him such a top player.

He can come up with screamers and can win matches single-handedly on his day. A consistent performer in the Premier League for the past few years now, Eriksen may fit well into United’s team under Solskjaer.

Verdict

Tottenham certainly wouldn’t want to sell him to a direct rival, and United would have to break their bank to acquire the services of the Danish playmaker. If they manage to do so, Eriksen’s signing would be some statement ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
