Man Utd must forget about Lukaku and sign this searing 23-goal hitman from the Ligue 1 – Here is why

Manchester United Opinion: Why Man United must sign Moussa Dembele?

According to a report from French publication L’Equipe, Manchester United are very much interested in signing Lyon striker Moussa Dembele and look set to make a move for him. (h/t The Daily Record)

Moussa Dembele, 23, joined Lyon from Celtic last August and went on to score 23 goals and provide six assists in 52 appearances across all competitions in his debut Ligue 1 campaign. He also netted twice on Sunday as Lyon came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1 in an Emirates Cup friendly.

After a fantastic 2018/19 Ligue 1 campaign, Lyon value the Frenchman upwards of £40m, adds the report.

Although Dembele appears to be happy staying with the Ligue 1 outfit, his addition to the Manchester United squad would prove excellent as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are nowhere near challenging the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Solskjaer is desperate to avoid a repeat of last year’s horror show and wants a couple of new faces more ahead of next week’s transfer deadline. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James are the only players to have arrived at Old Trafford this summer, but there could be some additions especially with Romelu Lukaku heavily linked with an exit.

Lukaku had failed to impress Solskjaer last season and has been linked with a move away since the start of the summer. Inter Milan is his preferred destination, with a deal between the two clubs the only stumbling block.

Even though the Italian club has failed to meet United’s valuation, it’s clear that Solskjaer doesn’t sees the Belgian as part of his plans next season and wants to get rid of him.

Celtic

In case Lukaku ends up moving to Inter, Dembele would be the Belgian’s perfect replacement at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer wants his United side to play with more pace, mobility, freedom and directness, and Dembele would be a good fit in that system.

Blessed with plenty of pace and power, the French striker loves to make penetrating runs in behind the opposition’s defence and finish off chances. He is a clinical finisher and boasts great technical ability with the ball at his feet.

The ex-Celtic star never hesitates from taking on players, is really good in the air and keeps the ability to outmuscle defenders to win aerial duels. Dembele isn’t only about scoring goals, he also is equally adept at creating chances for his teammates.

All in all, the former France youth international can combine extremely well with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Daniel James and Paul Pogba and take United’s attack to a different level altogether.

Verdict

At just 23, Dembele has a long way to go to unlock his true potential. He has all the raw ingredients and could certainly raise his game under the guidance of Solskjaer.
