Man Utd reviving interest in signing this effective 24-year-old from PL rivals would complete their midfield trio

Why Man United must reignite their interest in John McGinn in January

According to a report from the Metro, Sir Alex Ferguson had recommended Manchester United to sign Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn during the summer transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to sign only young, humble and dedicated British talents in the summer transfer window and managed to get his icy hands on the likes of Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire.

The Manchester United manager has attempted to reduce the average age of his side in a bid to play an expansive, free-flowing attacking football this season and he’ll hope the new signings will help him to make that change.

The Norwegian also wanted to address the midfield following the exits of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera. However, he couldn’t and that has left United’s options in midfield very limited for the 2019/20 campaign.

In Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic, Andreas Pereira, Fred and James Garner, the Red Devils clearly don’t have the quality and depth in central midfield to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

And that was clearly exposed at times in United’s season opener against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday. Despite United smashing Chelsea 4-0, Solskjaer has done a mistake by not reinforcing his midfield options which might come to haunt him once the season progresses.

That being said, the Red Devils must reignite their interest in John McGinn and attempt to sign him from Aston Villa when the transfer window re-opens in January.

John McGinn, 24, joined Aston Villa from Hibernian in 2018 and quickly became a fan favourite at Villa Park, playing a key role in their promotion from the Championship last season.

He was incredibly influential in defensive and attacking phases of play the last term, scoring seven goals and assisting nine as well. And the 24-year-old made an immediate impact in Villa’s opening Premier League game against Tottenham in north London last weekend, although Spurs won the game 3-1.

McGinn put Villa 1-0 up after Tyrone Mings launched the diminutive Scot with a long pin-point ball early in the first half.

The midfielder left Davinson Sanchez way behind following a spectacular mazy run and then sent Danny Rose to the ground before turning inside and slotting the ball past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Apart from the goal, the 24-year-old covered every blade of the grass and made some really good runs in the opposition box. The Scot impressed in Villa’s first game following promotion and can only get better as the season progresses.

Verdict

McGinn signed a long-term deal with his current club last week which should potential put off United. But Solskjaer shouldn’t get fazed and go all out to sign the tenacious Scotsman in January to solve his midfield conundrum.
