Man Utd signing this burly Spanish free agent would go a long way in adding a new dimension to their blunt attack

Manchester United opinion: Manchester United should sign Fernando Llorente

According to a report in the Metro, Manchester United have been linked with free agent Fernando Llorente. Until last season, he was playing for Tottenham Hotspur.

The former Spanish international, who is now 34, was a big part of Spurs’ Champions League campaign, helping them make it past Manchester City in the second-leg quarter-finals and changing the complexion of the game in the second-leg semi-final against Ajax.

Llorente is a fantastic target-man even today, as he showed in the games mentioned above and is a fantastic plan B when goals are hard to come by. He can help the side with some crucial points that might be the difference between a top-four finish and a place below that.

Manchester United are no strangers to using a target-man, having used Marouane Fellaini for many years in that role before selling him last January. Llorente is a recognized striker, however, and a better finisher than the big Belgian, who profiles as a midfielder.

Manchester United have quite a few options going forward, with Anthony Martial likely to play up-front in most games based on their pre-season. They also have Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez and Mason Greenwood.

All the players mentioned are possibly more suited to the high-pressing style that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will require of his team but sometimes 3 points are all that matters and Llorente would be a perfectly fine option to have off the bench.

With only a couple of hours before the deadline closes, Romelu Lukaku has agreed on a fee with Inter Milan and is close to leaving the club after two very inconsistent seasons. He was Jose Mourinho’s first-choice striker but wasn’t always fancied under Solskjaer.

United will have to change their approach, as Lukaku wasn’t the best at pressing nor was he a target man. However, he was a very accomplished finisher in the box and the likes of Martial and Rashford will have to really up their game this season to replace the big Belgian.

Conclusion

United can’t afford to have another season dithering at 6th place and will have to make a perfect start to the campaign to gain some momentum with lots of difficult fixtures on the horizon.

Llorente, on a free, would be a no-brainer, as he offers something different and would be a massive threat from set-pieces along with Harry Maguire.
