Why Man United should revive interest in Lorenzo Pellegrini

Manchester United’s summer overhaul is far from a complete one unless they fix the situation around their marquee player Paul Pogba, whose future remains up in the air with his exit links.

Bruno Fernandes is the closest option United have as a target thus far, however, the deal hasn’t reached the shore.

Besides Paul Pogba, United boast some promising talents like Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira but it would be way too premature and audacious to bet on them in the long run.

Pellegrini – a multifaceted player

Pellegrini, one of the greatest talents of Italy, had a promising season with the capital club the last term, racking up 4 goals and 7 assists in all competitions.

A long-term youth product of Roma, the 23-year-old broke into the first team by 2014 itself.

However, loan spells with Sassuolo helped him overcome the game-time depravity and earned him the right to be in the main team again. He has made 10 appearances so far for the Italian national team.

Pellegrini’s growth can be seen through his increase in the goal-scoring ratio by the years and the flexibility to play anywhere along the middle of the park.

Statistically, the Italian prospect secured pass success percentage of 80 in Serie A last season, with an average of 2.4 key passes, 1 dribble and 1.8 shots attempted per game.

All these stats came in the season where he donned different roles. Besides, he had quite a run with his national side in the Euro U21, racking up a goal and an assist with an overwhelming average of 3.3 key passes, 3 dribbles and 4 shots on target attempted per game.

In the end, he suffered the same fate as he had with his club and did not progress to the knockouts, despite some wonderful performances.

Now, Pellegrini can fit in several roles yet his best position would be the central midfielder. To be precise, he is the cross between Paul Pogba and the recently-left Ander Herrera.

Having a knack for pin-point through balls and an inclination in the attacking third, the player also embraces his defensive duties with ease due to his tall build. Thus, Pellegrini can’t be missed by United at any cost.
