Manchester United avenged recent derby day humiliations with a memorable 4-2 victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils went a goal behind in the early stages thanks to a nervy start, but recovered quickly to take control of the game and seal a fine win thanks to goals from Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling.
Here is how Louis van Gaal’s reds fared on a day Manchester turned red again.
David De Gea – 7
Calm under pressure. Saved the shot from Jesus Navas early on and contributed to United’s equalizer with a long range clearance.
Antonio Valencia – 7
Snuffed out the threat of David Silva with diligent defending down United’s right side. A willing runner in United’s attacking moves.
Chris Smalling – 7.5
Tidy as ever at the back and would be pleased to get on the score sheet.
Phil Jones – 7
Nervy start but settled quickly to deal with Aguero’s threat.
Daley Blind – 7.5
Excellent outlet down the left flank. Great linkup play with Ashley Young for United’s second and had a role to play in the crucial third goal.
Michael Carrick – 8
Controlled the pace of the game from his deeper role. Calm and composed as ever and excellent with his passing and keeping things ticking in midfield.
Ander Herrera – 7.5
Always looking to get on the ball and make things happen. Provided the cross for Young’s equalizer.
Juan Mata – 8
Excellent run for the third goal in addition to some responsible defending. Great vision and passing throughout the evening.
Ashley Young – 9
Hammered home the equalizer from close range at the second attempt. Assists for Fellaini and Smalling’s goals. Destroyed Zabaleta at right back.
Marouane Fellaini – 8.5
A nightmare for the City backline. Everything United do in an attacking sense seems to come through the Belgian. A vital cog in the team right now. Great header for the second goal.
Wayne Rooney – 7.5
Classy assist for Mata’s goal. Willing worker despite failure to get on the score sheet.
Subs –
Falcao – 5
Di Maria – 6
Rojo – 5
