Manchester United Player Ratings Against Southampton

Manchester United slumped to their fourth defeat of the season as a well-drilled Southampton side frustrated the Red Devils and took home all three points, thanks to substitute Dusan Tadic’s second half strike. Ronald Koeman extracted some sweet revenge on his old adversary as Louis van Gaal’s side failed to create any real goal scoring opportunities, resulting in Southampton’s first win at Old Trafford in more than quarter of a century.

Let’s take a look at the Manchester United player ratings from last night.

David De Gea – 6/10

Untroubled for much of the game, could do little to prevent the goal.

Phil Jones – 5/10

Elia had the beating of him on a few occasions. Looks a touch shaky, but overall Jones looked better of the two centre backs.

Smalling – 4.5/10

Disaster of a match. At fault for the goal with his awful positioning and decision making. Probably deserves to be dropped for United’s next match.

Blind – 5.5/10

Put in one or two good crosses when shifted to LWB. Did reasonably well for his first full game in two months.

Valencia – 5/10

Frustrating game for the Ecuadorian. Although he ran up and down the ball, he let himself down with the final ball.

Shaw – 4.5/10

Subbed off with 25 minutes to go. Looked off-color and lacked sharpness.

Carrick – 5.5/10

Rare off day for the English man. Ward Prowse did a good job on him, yet Carrick managed to keep it calm infront of his shaky defence.

Rooney – 5/10

Never really managed to get into the game. Poor passing and little movement from the England skipper.

Mata – 5.5/10

Had two glorious chances towards the end, but wasn’t his day. But, the Spaniard looked the most creative United player on the night.

Di Maria – 4.5/10

Woeful passing, poor first touch. One expects better from a player who lit up the Champions League final last May. However, van Gaal should be blamed at here as di Maria lacked match sharpness, probably the result of LVG rushing him into the starting lineup.

Robin van Persie – 5/10

One shot on goal, a couple of sweet touches but little productive in front of goal.

Sub’s:

Herrera – 5/10

Tried to link up with the likes of Mata and Valencia, but Southampton allowed little space to exploit.

Blackett – 4.5/10

Has to improve his positioning to get regular opportunities at this level.

Fellaini – 4.5/10

Failed to make much of an impact after coming on for Di Maria.
