Man United should not miss the chance to sign this UEFA Nations League winner once the window reopens in January

Why Manchester United should sign Bruno Fernandes

According to a report in the Metro, Manchester United will be looking to strengthen their squad in the winter transfer window by adding Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes, who was linked with them all summer.

United did spend a lot of money in the summer window on the transfers of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who have settled in nicely at Old Trafford.

United blitzed past Chelsea in their first game of the season and were impressive away to Wolves, despite only coming out with a 1-1 draw after a controversial penalty miss from Paul Pogba.

The Red Devils have trimmed down their bloated squad by getting rid of many players in the summer and allowing for a pathway for some of their academy graduates but there are a couple of positions in the first-team that could still use some improvement.

Bruno Fernandes

One position is the attacking midfield department, where Bruno Fernandes thrives. With United playing a 4-2-3-1, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata are likely to constantly rotate in that area. Lingard is important to help initiate United’s pressing system, whereas Mata will add the creativity that Lingard lacks.

Fernandes has both of these qualities in good measure and would not compromise on either, which would have helped them massively in the game against Wolves.

He had a ridiculous record last season, where he scored 32 goals in all competitions and also provided 18 assists. He was also a part of the Portuguese national team that won the UEFA Nations League and looked particularly impressive in the final against the Netherlands.

Fernandes is also a set-piece taker and would definitely help United with that skill-set because of the aerial presence in the United team with the likes of Harry Maguire and Paul Pogba waiting in the box.

United also have a lot of players who are capable of winning fouls cause of their frightening pace. Their pace will also allow Fernandes to play passes in behind and make space for himself to take shots from range, which is a strength of his.

Conclusion

Manchester United only got a point from the same fixtures last season and are clearly looking like they’re finally taking small steps in the right direction and by getting someone like Bruno Fernandes, they’ll be sorting another piece in the puzzle.
