“What an embarrassment”, “It’s a comedy”: Some Man United fans go mental after shock 2-0 loss to Cardiff + Match report

Manchester United vs Cardiff City report – Manchester United Match Report

Manchester United ended their turmultous season in disarray by losing to an already-relegated Cardiff City 2-0 at Old Trafford.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored both the goals for Neil Warnock’s men on either side of half-time to achieve a dream win for the Welsh side.

On the other hand, United, who fielded six academy graduates, struggled for any rhythm in their game. This defeat confirmed their finish as the sixth-placed team in the league.

The home side dominated the opening exchanges but couldn’t find that cutting edge in the final third.

Eventually, the deadlock was broken, but at the other end, when Diogo Dalot fouled Mendez-Laing in the box, leaving the referee with no choice but to point at the penalty spot.

The Cardiff man stepped up and coolly slotted his effort past David de Gea to give his side the lead in the 23rd minute.

United created chances, but Mason Greenwood, who had a good game, was not able to provide the finishing touches.

Warnock’s men doubled their lead nine minutes into the second half when Josh Murphy found an unmarked Mendez-Laing at the far post to drive home the finish.

18-year-old Angel Gomes came on and he provided moments of spark. However, both him and Greenwood scuffed their chances to pull things back for the hosts.

All in all, a painful season came to a bad end for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, who have a big summer ahead of them. They eventually finished 32 points behind the champions Manchester City. Some gap to close that!
