Manchester United’s Diamond Formation,Will It Really workout?

When the 1990 Milan side, invented this formation,it was something that revolutionized the world of football. They became one of the best sides in history of football, winning everything on their way.

Carlo Ancellotti and his Chelsea side scored more than 100 goals in premier league, which was a record,en route to their League title in 2009-2010 season.

Manchester United often had a rich source of wingers adopting their 4-4-2 formation. When Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie were bought this summer, the real question was how Ferguson would make Rooney, van Persie,Kagawa play in the same team. The trio didn’t play with each other, due to the gash in Rooney’s leg in late august.

Sir Alex came with the idea not until the league match against Newcastle.Diamond formation often needs players who are agile and adaptable to many positions. The movement needs to be supreme and should be accurate for immediate success. The team needs a holding midfielder, two centre midfielders and two strikers and a centre forward. With United having Carrick as the holding midfielder. With Cleverly,Anderson,Scholes and Fletcher,United have good resources in that position.Having Nani,Valencia,Young,Kagawa,Rooney, van Persie,Welbeck and Chicharito, there is no lack of strikers in the team. The attack is sure to be a success.

However,United with their current defensive woes, playing an attack minded formation, might leave them uncovered and exposed at the back. The full-backs Evra and Rafael have been good going forward, but they continue to be poor in their defensive duties. With skipper Vidic,Jones injured, they might need more defensive stability as Aging Ferdinand is no more fast,Evans needs to find his right partner and Smaling might need more experience at center back position. Also,United need another holding midfielder with Carrick who is 32 and it is very unfair to ask him to play almost every match in a season.

There is no doubt that it could make Fergie’s side a better footballing team. But he needs some time, before he could make this as their permanent formation.
