Everton 2-6 Tottenham: Spurs hit the Toffees for a six at Goodison Park

Tottenham Hotspur closed the gap on Manchester City at the top of the standings with an emphatic 6-2 victory over Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Lilywhites made a bright start to the game and looked head and shoulders above their opposition, showing more intent to stamp their authority on the game.

Marco Silva’s gamble to play a high line against an attacking opposition backfired badly as Spurs got in behind the Everton defence on numerous occasions. Kieran Trippier’s inch-perfect lobbed pass found Harry Kane with only the keeper to beat but the talisman chipped it over the bar to squander a golden chance.

However, it was Everton who took the lead much against the run of play, with Gylfi Sigurdsson finding Dominic Calvert-Lewin in space who picked out Theo Walcott’s run with an accurate cut-back from the left. The former Arsenal man recorded his sixth career goal against the visitors with a tap-in past Hugo Lloris.

In all honesty, the game was a treat to watch with both teams going hammer and tongs at each other. Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed it in from Walcott’s cross from the left but his goal was disallowed due to a suspected push on Davinson Sanchez. This was one of the talking points of the first half and it could have been given as a goal on another day.

Spurs took control of the game as Everton were deprived of the ball and the Mauricio Pochettino’s men soon found a reply. Heung-Min Son took advantage of a miscommunication between Jordan Pickford and Kurt Zouma to fire the ball into an open net.

Son was once again involved in the second goal and it was Pickford’s save from his shot that fell into the path of Dele Alli who made it 2-1. Things got bad to worse for the Toffees when Kieran Trippier’s free-kick hit the post and fell favourably for Harry Kane to make it 3-1.

Spurs carried the momentum into the second half and Christian Eriksen added a fourth with a thunderous low drive from outside the box into the bottom corner of Pickford’s net. However, Everton got a lifeline when Gylfi Sigurdsson made space inside the box to fire a shot past Lloris

There was no way back for the home side as Spurs continued to run riot at Goodison Park and took full advantage of Everton’s high defensive line. Substitute Erik Lamela set it up for Son, who beat the offside trap to slot it in past Pickford to make the scoreline more emphatic.

And it was Harry Kane who capped off a rampant display by the visitors with a sixth goal from Son’s cross. The victory meant that the Lilywhites continued their impressive run in the Premier League while Everton finished the week outside the top-ten.
