“MOTM”, “Give him a 10-year contract”: Some Man United fans single out star performer in the 4-1 thrashing of Fulham + Match report

Manchester United 4-1 Fulham: The Reds move into sixth place in the table

Manchester United moved to sixth place in the Premier League table with a 4-1 victory over Fulham in Saturday’s encounter at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils went into the game having failed to win in four top-flight fixtures but Ashley Young, Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford all got on the scoresheet for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Ashley Young did a fine job of lifting the sour mood at Old Trafford by nutmegging Denis Odoi on the left in the 13th minute before cutting inside onto his right foot and arrowing an effort into the far corner from 15 yards out. The goal acted as the catalyst for United, giving the players confidence, especially for the attackers to work their magic in the final third.

The hosts soon went 2-0 up. Romelu Lukaku released Marcus Rashford down the left and he squared for Juan Mata to steer in his fourth of the season. After Manchester United took a 2-0 advantage, Rashford tested Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico with a venomous free-kick in the 38th minute.

The Reds got their third goal before half-time through a well-versed set-piece. Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata exchanged sleek passes between themselves before the latter squared Lukaku for the easiest of finishes.

The game was dead and buried after the first 45 but Fulham had other plans. Claudio Ranieri made two changes at half-time, throwing Aboubakar Kamara and Luciano Vietto to freshen up his attack. The double substitution worked well as Kamara and Vietto threatened United with their pace and movement after the break.

As soon as United took their foot off the gas, they were punished by the visitors. Ander Herrera was harshly adjudged to have fouled Kamara, who converted from the spot to pull one back for Fulham. However, Fulham’s hopes were short-lived as Anguissa Zambo challenged Rashford sloppily and was shown a second yellow card.

Rico made a couple of important saves from Rashford and Lukaku to keep Fulham in the game but the Spanish goalkeeper couldn’t keep out the former’s curling effort from the edge of the box and pushed it into his own net.

Substitute Scott McTominay, who also celebrated his 22nd birthday, spurned an easy headed opportunity towards the end after Diogo Dalot teed him up. And the scoreline remained 4-1 but Mourinho will be more than satisfied with his team’s performance at a time when three points were desperately required.
