Newcastle beating PL rivals to sign £10m Celtic star in January would be a massive swoop

Why Newcastle should beat Brighton to sign Celtic star Callum McGregor

Brighton and Hove Albion are plotting a £10million January swoop for Celtic star Callum McGregor, as per the Scottish Sun.

A product of Celtic’s youth system, Callum McGregor made his senior debut for the Scottish club in 2014 and has established himself as an important member under Brendan Rodgers. Since Rodgers’ arrival at Parkhead in 2016, the 25-year-old has made over 100 appearances in two seasons in all competitions.

McGregor has arguably become an incredibly important part of the Bhoys’ midfield over the last 12 months. The Scotsman, however, has not had the best of starts in the new Scottish Premiership campaign. In reality, he has thrived under Rodgers even though has managed just one goal in eight Premiership appearances so far this term.

As far as the interest in McGregor is concerned, Brighton certainly are aiming to add more firepower to their attack after making a decent start to their Premier League campaign. Chris Hughton took everyone by surprise when his team defeated Manchester United 3-2 early this season.

Hughton seems to have been impressed by the development of McGregor and is eyeing a deal in January. With Brighton readying a £10million offer, should Newcastle United rival the Seagulls to the signature of McGregor? They definitely should.

Newcastle are struggling in the Premier League at the moment, with Rafael Benitez’s team yet to register a win this season. The Magpies are lacking quality in the attacking department, which has apparently plotted the club’s downfall this season.

Benitez wasn’t backed in the summer by owner Mike Ashley and the aftermath of a poor transfer window is beginning to show. If Newcastle are to avoid the drop, Ashley needs to loosen his purse strings and back Benitez in January. New players are definitely needed at St. James’ Park and Benitez must target Callum McGregor to bolster his attacking ranks.

Creativity has been a real problem for Benitez’s men this season and McGregor would be the ideal player to solve that problem. The 25-year-old is a versatile midfielder capable of playing on the flanks too. He is a fantastic passer of the ball, creates openings for his teammates and also can finish off the chances presented to him. The Scotsman can strike the ball sweetly with his left foot as well.

McGregor can contribute to the build-up play in the attacking third for Newcastle and also drop deep before driving forward with the ball. The left-footed ace can be extremely useful in the midfield as well, with his ability to link up the play from deep.

A player blessed with such qualities, McGregor would be a top acquisition for the Magpies. The 25-year-old is definitely an exciting player and Newcastle must go all out in January to beat Brighton for his signature.
