Newcastle United opinion: Benitez should make a move for Dwight McNeil

English news outlet Daily Star has reported that Newcastle United are interested in Burnley starlet Dwight McNeil. The young winger has been in terrific form for the Clarets of late, finding his footing in the Premier League.

He was brought up from Burnley’s youth squad at the start of last season but struggled initially. However, with a new deal in January, McNeil was shown exactly how much the club value him and he finally made his mark for the Clarets.

He has played consistently since last year’s boxing day, making 16 continuous appearances since then. Not only that, the 19-year-old has contributed to 8 goals in that time, showcasing his ability time after time.

That is a rare sight in the Premier League this season, with few youngsters getting a chance to impress regularly.

This is emphasised by the fact that Dwight McNeil is now one of the most creative teenagers in the Premier League. It’s exactly why Newcastle United need the young winger, given their issues this season.

Miguel Almiron has played mostly as a winger, prior to which Newcastle United had to depend on Christian Atsu or Robert Kenedy. Neither has impressed this season. Kenedy was a big part of the club last season, but he has had a crisis of confidence this season.

Atsu, on the other hand, has also struggled since making his move from Chelsea in the summer of 2017.

Since then, the 27-year-old has contributed to just four goals and is yet to open his account this season despite already making 28 appearances. It showcases exactly what Newcastle United need and Dwight McNeil can be that man.

The 19-year-old has shown ability and maturity well beyond his years. He’s calm and composed in front of goal, as witnessed when he scored a superb solo goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

This showcased the best of his abilities, where he used his pace, agility and surprising strength to great effect. It’s exactly why he would fit Rafael Benitez’s team.

Furthermore, the Magpies have a better road to the first-team and that is something Dwight McNeil needs at this stage in his career.
