Newcastle United opinion – Magpies should offer a new contract to Matt Ritchie
According to a report in the Sun, Newcastle United’s current left wing-back, Matt Ritchie has been told that he can leave the club in summer. This escalated after the player’s request for a new deal was rejected.
As per the report, the winger-turned-wing-back spoke to manager Rafa Benitez and asked about his contract extension. The gaffer rejected his request, citing age as one of the reasons. Ritchie’s current contract expires in 2021. He turns 30 in September. (h/t Sun)
However, Benitez denies these claims and said that there have been no contract talks with any of the senior players in the squad. (h/t Chronicle)
Here’s why the Magpies should shut all the rumours by offering a contract extension to Ritchie:
Ritchie is too important a player for Newcastle
The Scotland international arrived at St.James’ Park in the summer of 2016. Since then, he has been an integral part of the team. He was part of the team’s promotion campaign and has now settled in well at the top-flight.
We are all aware that the 29-year-old is a winger, who can play on either flank. He has done that for most of his Newcastle career and delivered the goods.
However, Benitez’s switch to a five at the back system has forced Ritchie into a left wing-back role.
To be fair to the player, he initially took some time to settle into his new role, but in the past couple of months, we are witnessing the commitment and desire from him to perform for the team, regardless of the position he plays in.
This shows that the Scotsman is an integral part of the team. At 29, he has the experience and know-how of the game. He plays his football with 100% determination, and the fans at Newcastle really adore players who give their all on the pitch.

Conclusion
Therefore, even if his current contract’s expiry is two years from now, Ritchie has done enough for the club to deserve an extension.
