Newcastle signing this in-form Wolves star in the summer would be an absolute steal – Rafa must do this

Newcastle opinion: Should the Magpies make a move for Conor Coady?

The Sun (h/t TeamTalk) has reported that Newcastle United are keen on a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers star Conor Coady. The former Liverpool man has been a big part of Wolves’ success this season, missing zero games this season.

He arrived at the Molineux as a midfielder, who could play as a right-back, but under Nuno Espirito Santo’s tutelage, Coady soon started playing as a centre-back.

His performances in the Championship were incredible, with his past as a midfielder playing a big role in that. Coady has raised the bar even further this season and become an immense part of Wolves’ incredible run in the Premier League.

At the moment, they sit at seventh place, increasing their lead even further, after beating Watford on Saturday. They now sit 3 points clear of Leicester City, who are their closest rivals to a Europa League spot.

That consistency should attract Rafael Benitez’s back-three. The former Liverpool boss has used a back-three quite often this season, consisting of Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, and Florian Lejeune when fit.

While they have clicked at times this season, it’s not a back-three that can be relied upon frequently. Especially Schar and Lejeune, with the latter’s injury issues and Schar’s inconsistent performances. It’s the options that Benitez has at his disposal and he utilizes them to the best of his abilities.

Someone like Conor Coady would be perfect to step into a back-three and replace either one. The 26-year-old is also a very technical footballer and the Liverpool boss likes his centre-backs to be technically sound.

It’s a move that would solidify the Magpies’ back-line, giving them a chance to do more in the Premier League. Benitez has overachieved with the resources and personnel at his disposal, which shows what he can do with more.

Conclusion

Conor Coady may not be the best defender in the world, but he is a reliable and consistent performer as he has shown over the last few seasons.

His season in the Premier League has considerably upped his market value and if Newcastle United really want to make a move, now is the time.
