Newcastle activating £16.5m release clause of in-form attacker is an absolute no-brainer – Rafa has to do it

Newcastle United opinion: The Magpies should waste no time in signing Rondon

According to a report in the Chronicle Live, Salomon Rondon will cost Newcastle £16.5million to sign permanently and they have been warned to get a move done or expect competition for him.

Rondon has been fantastic for the Toon, having scored 12 goals this season while on loan from West Brom. The Baggies lost to Aston Villa in the Championship playoffs. Their failure to get back into the Premier League after having been knocked out means that the cost of any deal could be set.

The striker will have a one-year contract extension triggered when he is handed back to the Baggies next month, which will lead to the activation of the release clause mentioned earlier.

Salomon Rondon

There isn’t anything confirmed regarding Rafa Benitez’s future but Rondon would be of great value at St. James’ Park regardless of who is at the helm next season.

The Venezuelan is great target-man but beyond that, he’s also a willing runner. The bigger centre-forwards don’t generally tend to run the channels a lot but Rondon is willing to put those extra miles for the team.

His goalscoring numbers have been questionable but he’s improved massively this season and should look to continue in that vein at Newcastle.

Dwight Gayle made the switch the other way and with Rondon having successfully replaced him this season, this would be the best move for all parties.

Rondon seems to have settled down well under Rafael Benitez and he looks like the kind of striker who suits the Spaniard’s footballing philosophy.

Conclusion

As mentioned above, Newcastle shouldn’t waste any time in paying Rondon’s release clause and helping him make the switch to St. James’ Park permanent.

He would help this Newcastle side flourish up front and he could perform better once a permanent move is finalised.
