Newcastle United should look away from this squad player and target someone better – agreed?

Newcastle United opinion: Should the Toffees make a move for Scott Dann?

According to the Sun (5th June, page 52), Newcastle United are interested in making a move for Crystal Palace star Scott Dann. The report further adds that with centre-back Florian Lejeune missing a large part of last season thanks to injuries, Benitez is looking for cover.

Lejeune suffered a knee injury that could see him miss parts of next season as well. This does give the former Liverpool boss a headache.

The deal is a good price for a 32-year-old centre-back but it is not one that Newcastle should make. They were promoted at the start of last season and since then have just managed to do just get over the line in the Premier League, even flirting with relegation this season.

Things changed once the January window opened and new additions walked in, but it has to be the same in the summer. That is because a few of last summer’s signings flopped and struggled to do much.

Yoshinori Muto and Federico Fernandez are two prime examples, and while Sung-Young Ki did miss parts of the season via injury, the South Korean did well otherwise. There were a few players who did do well with Miguel Almiron, Salomon Rondon and Fabian Schar all making the first-team on a regular basis.

Those are the kind of moves that Newcastle United and even Rafael Benitez need to focus on as they look to move forward. The Magpies have a good manager in the former Liverpool boss and with him in charge maybe they can punch above their weight class in the near future.

They’ve already shown that capability by beating Manchester City and somehow the Magpies need to play more like that. It was largely down to Benitez’s tactics and the right additions in the January window that made a big difference and it’s why Scott Dann is a mistake waiting to happen.

The Crystal Palace star has barely made an impact this season, with a cruciate ligament tear affecting performances. But more importantly, the injury took a lot out of him and that showed in the final few days.

Conclusion

Newcastle United certainly need reinforcements in the summer window but as previous summers have proven, they have to be the right additions. Players like Scott Dann are far from the right additions and it’s a move that would only hurt both parties.
