Norwich signing this 21-year-old prospect for £1.8m would get them a quality shot-stopper to deal with the PL

Norwich City Opinion – Canaries linked with Simon Sluga – Good move?

According to a report in Eastern Daily Press (EDP), Premier League’s new boys Norwich City and Sheffield United are interested in signing HNK Rijeka goalkeeper Simon Sluga during this transfer window. Hertha Berlin and playoff finalists Derby County are also in the race. (h/t EDP)

As per the report, a fee around £1.8m is suggested for the stopper, who still has two years left in his contract with the Croatian side (h/t EDP). The 26-year-old has had a great season, which led to him getting called up for the senior national side.

He has also been named in the squad for next month’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Wales and a friendly against Tunisia. It shows that the national team management see him as one of the growing talents in the country.

Sluga kept goal in 35 league games this season, keeping 13 clean sheets and conceding only 35 goals, which is pretty decent for a team that finished second in the table, 23 points behind the leaders Dinamo Zagreb.

With the three English clubs taking a close look (h/t EDP), here’s why Norwich should pull away in this race and make a concrete move in this window:

Sluga could challenge Krul for the number one spot

As of now, Norwich City have Tim Krul as their number one keeper. The Dutchman did well this season and has past Premier League experience to help the team in the coming campaign.

However, the Canaries do not boast a very high-class backup option, with all due respect to Michael McGovern and Aston Oxborough. The former has signed a new deal at Carrow Road, but keeping him as a number two goalkeeper in a league as tough as the English top-flight would be risky.

The latter is still only 21, and could do with a loan move elsewhere to gain game time experience on a regular basis.

Hence, it is clear that Daniel Farke’s men may have to buy a new keeper this summer, either to challenge Krul’s place in the team or to remain a very good backup available.

For that reason, getting Simon Sluga would be a great solution. The Croatian international is a high-class keeper, who is agile, quick off his feet, good from crosses and has the traits of a fantastic modern-day goalie.

Conclusion

Norwich are in the big league now, thus, keeping two top-class goalkeepers is a necessity. Therefore, getting Sluga wouldn’t be a luxury, but a necessity. They must beat others in the race to sign the HNK Rijeka goalkeeper.
