Norwich signing this proven lower league attacker could be their key to survival this season

Why Macauley Bonne would be a smart signing for Norwich City

Back in December 2018, The Sun had claimed Norwich City were one of the English clubs interested in signing Macauley Bonne, who was then plying his trade in the National League for Leyton Orient.

Macauley Bonne scored 23 goals in 46 games last season, helping Leyton Orient win promotion to the Football League Two. The 24-year-old signed for Charlton Athletic on a three-year deal this past summer and has hit the ground running for his new club, bagging 6 goals in 14 Championship games so far.

With the two-cap Zimbabwe international impressing at Charlton Athletic under Lee Bowyer, Norwich City would be wise to rekindle their interest in the striker next month.

Norwich had won their last away game – 2-0 at fellow strugglers Everton last month but they were poor against Southampton at the St. Mary’s on Wednesday. The defeat at Southampton means they have only picked up four points from eight away league games.

Things are looking bleak for the Canaries and it’ll take a herculean effort for Daniel Farke and co. to pull an escape from top-flight relegation. Injuries have not helped Farke’s cause but the matter of fact is that the German tactician’s current squad is not good enough to stay in the Premier League.

Thus, he must add a couple of players in January to boost his team’s chances of avoiding the drop at the first time of asking. Considering Norwich’s poor defensive record in the division, it’s an absolute no-brainer for Farke to strengthen his backline.

A couple of experienced defenders are of paramount importance to stop the Norfolk club from leaking goals. In addition, Farke should also bring in a goalscorer to help Teemu Pukki.

Amidst a mediocre return to the top-flight, Pukki has been good for the Canaries, scoring 8 goals in 15 games. Given the manner in which he’s adapted to life in the top-flight, the Finn is indispensable to Farke. However, Pukki needs more support up front for Norwich to score goals freely.

That’s when Norwich must sign Macauley Bonne. Pukki may have hit form of late but Bonne would add firepower to Farke’s attack. His goalscoring track has been impressive this season and the 24-year-old could be the man to save them from going down further.

According to WhoScored.com, he has registered an average of 1.8 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per game this term for Charlton. His numbers prove that he has a knack of finding the net.

Verdict

Farke must ensure that he signs the striker, even more so since Norwich have no proper back-up to Pukki. In Bonne, the Canaries would have a promising striker and this would be a positive for Farke.
