Two painful moments from last season etched in the memory of all Liverpool fans will undoubtedly be Loris Karius’ mistakes in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. Liverpool, having lost Salah, were still in the game, but Karius’ two errors proved to be decisive as they ultimately lost 3-1 in Kiev.
That being said, Liverpool have lots of positives to take home from last season. Their defence improved a lot after Virgil Van Dijk arrived from Southampton in January. Young full-backs Andy Robertson and Alexander-Arnold were in tremendous form, while Dejan Lovren also improved his game towards the second half of the 2017/18 campaign.
However, Liverpool need to sign a world-class goalkeeper in the summer to possibly mount a serious title push next season, and they have been linked with making a move for AC Milan custodian Gianluigi Donnarumma, for who Milan are expecting more than £54m.
Donnarumma to the rescue?
Donnarumma would end Liverpool’s woes between the sticks. Despite being just 19 years old, the Italian has held his own in the Milan team and has cemented his spot as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world. Goalkeepers get better with age, and with many more years still left for Donnarumma to reach his prime, Liverpool would do well to sign him in the summer and finally get an able replacement for Pepe Reina.
Reina was a mainstay of the Liverpool squad for nearly 6 years and was instrumental in their impressive performances under then manager Rafa Benitez.
Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Chelsea are also interested in the teenager and the Blues could look to sign Donnarumma, who didn’t enjoy the best of seasons last term, in the summer in a swap deal involving Alvaro Morata.
Milan won’t be able to offer Donnarumma Champions League football next season as they finished sixth in Serie A in the 2017/18 campaign. Chelsea are also not in the Champions League after missing out on a top four finish in the Premier League last term.
However, joining Liverpool would be an exciting prospect for Donnarumma. The Reds under Jurgen Klopp’s guidance are once again a force to be reckoned with in England and in Europe. And if the Merseysiders manage to snap up the young Italian custodian, it’s safe to say that it will be a good move for all parties involved.
