Nuhiu and Boyd to start – Predicted 4-3-3 Sheffield Wednesday XI to face Wigan Athletic

Predicted Sheffield Wednesday line-up to face Wigan Athletic in the EFL Championship

Sheffield Wednesday travel to the DW Stadium to face Wigan Athletic on matchday 1 of the EFL Championship 2018/19 season. Manager Jos Luhukay would be hoping that his team improves its performance this season to give a shot at promotion.

The Owls haven’t made any “game-changing” signings this summer and will hope the current squad delivers the goods. Few U23 academy graduates should be promoted to the first-team this season, so it’s going be exciting to see young talents in action.

Team News

Luhukay has confirmed that Steven Fletcher will be in the squad, while Kieran Lee and Garry Hooper will miss the action. These three have missed most of the action since the turn of this year, and Wednesday will be keen to get Lee and Hooper back as soon as possible.

Predicted Sheffield Wednesday line-up

Formation: 4-3-3

Manager: Jos Luhukay

Joe Wildsmith (GK)

Wildsmith has been a constant presence in the goalkeeping department for Sheffield Wednesday since last season. Expect him to be the number one this year too.

Liam Palmer (RB)

After the departure of Jack Hunt to Bristol City, Palmer will have more responsibility to be the first-choice right-back this season.

Tom Lees

Tom Lees (CB)

Lees is an ever-present for the Owls and will be leading the backline with sturdy defensive work.

Joost van Aken (CB)

van Aken started against Villareal in Sheffield Wednesday’s last pre-season game. He should start alongside Lees against Wigan.

Daniel Pudil (LB)

Pudil is an experienced defender who will bring calmness and defensive security for the Owls before making forays up the pitch.

Joey Pelupessy

Joey Pelupessy (CDM)

Pelupessy will be there as a central defensive midfielder to protect the back-four, as he did against Villarreal.

Barry Bannan (LCM)

Bannan is a type of player who will give his all every time he steps on to the pitch. He is a pure workhorse, who will cover the ground well to impact the game on all fronts.

 Adam Reach (RCM)

Reach will add the creative spark to the team with his crucial key passes and sturdy defensive contribution to round-up a perfect midfield performance.

George Boyd

George Boyd (RW)

Boyd wasn’t a consistent starter last season but is expected to begin this year with a place in the team. It will be his chance to shine and impress Luhukay.

Atdhe Nuhiu (ST)

With Gary Hooper sure to miss out, Nuhiu will lead the line for the Owls and look to cement his spot in the team.

Fernando Forestieri (LW)

Forestieri will add dynamism and direct running with the ball to cause trouble to the defenders. His shooting from distance is also a great asset to have.
