“Ole is working his magic”, “8 goals in 2 games”: Some Man United fans can’t handle the joy after 3-1 win over Huddersfield + Match report

Manchester 3-1 Huddersfield: Pogba double secures 2nd win for Solskjaer

Paul Pogba scored a second-half double to earn Manchester United a 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first game at Old Trafford as interim manager.

The feel-good factor around Old Trafford following Solskjaer’s appointment was clear from the start, although Manchester United failed to reach the heights scaled at Cardiff but ended up with another comprehensive Premier League win.

Manchester United started positively, with the players exchanging quick one-twos and always playing the ball forward. Huddersfield tried to exploit the spaces left by the hosts on the counter and nearly landed a blow as United’s shaky backline was disturbed by a long throw but Terence Kongolo fired over.

After constantly putting pressure on Huddersfield, Solskjaer’s men finally found the breakthrough in the 28th minute. Victor Lindelof’s powerful header at the near post from a whipped Marcus Rashford corner was cleared off the line by Elias Kachunga, only for the ball to fall kindly for Nemanja Matic to turn in from close range.

The goal gave a spring to the hosts’ steps as Juan Mata saw a shot deflected wide after patient build-up before Marcus Rashford nutmegged Jorgensen and sent in a vicious cross for Diogo Dalot to fizz just wide at the far post.

The visitors had a chance to make it 1-1 after Fred lost possession inside his own half. Phillip Billing tried to be cheeky but managed to hit only the side-netting.

Fred and Dalot were taken off just eight minutes into the second half, with Solskjaer turning to Ander Herrera and Ashley Young after seeing Huddersfield start brightly. Huddersfield were clearly the better side in the opening minutes of the second half, with Laurent Depoitre coming close to level things up only to be denied by a brilliant save from David De Gea.

That save proved decisive as Manchester United took a 2-1 lead through Paul Pogba, who drilled in a fierce low shot from 13 metres out in the 64th minute after a fantastic build-up play that involved Rashford, Mata and Herrera.

The Frenchman sealed United’s win with a rasping long-range effort in the 78th minute before Mathias Jorgensen netted a late consolation for Huddersfield.
