Opinion: Do Arsenal Need To Sign A Striker Better Than Olivier Giroud?

A transfer window is about to hit the Premier League soon, or soon enough if you think about it. Teams will be looking to strengthen their squads and getting a striker could well be on the wish list for Arsenal, they could be looking to continue their big spending like they have done for the past two summers. Olivier Giroud has been the mains striker at the club and while he has not been fit enough to start a lot of games this season, he still has provided a decent return. Arsenal might be looking to get a better striker or a fitter striker than Giroud but is that the way to go?

A fit Giroud would be ideal for the Gunners

The stats are somewhat in favour of the Frenchman, Giroud has only started 17 games for Arsenal in the Premier League this season but has scored 14 goals which is a pretty decent record to have in such a tough league. He did miss a chunk of this season due to injury and after his recovery has slowly got back to being that feared striker that people expected him to be.

In more ways than one, he is an upgrade to another hot striker in the French League. Andre-Pierre Gicnac has been linked with a move away from Marseille but he is considered inferior to Giroud at least in terms of goal scoring ability. Giroud might not be the most mobile striker out there but when it comes to taking chances and heading the ball into the net, he is right up there as one of the best in the Premier League.

Arsenal might go in for a striker who could be better than Giroud or provide something more than Giroud does but do they really need someone like that? The answer probably is no, Arsenal need someone who can link up well with Giroud and provide Arsene with a plan B in case things do not go according to plan. The two players who have been linked with a move to Arsenal are a couple of French hot shots like Lacazette and Gicnac, but they cannot play in tandem with Giroud.

Arsenal already have more than enough support in the goal scoring department without the need of another top striker, the likes of Sanchez, Ozil, Walcott and Cazorla can handle and chip in the goals when needed. What Arsenal actually need is a striker who can come off the bench and help them out in dire circumstances.

Arsenal already have a couple of strikers out on loan, the pair of Campbell and Sanogo might not be ready to take up the main striker’s mantle at Arsenal but their development in their respective clubs should help them get to terms with playing regular first team football. Campbell though has played 16 games this season for Villareal and hasn’t scored yet, while Sanogo has scored once for Crystal Palace this season, either way it has to be one of these strikers who would need to do a job at Arsenal next season playing second fiddle to Giroud.

The main thing Arsenal need to ensure is that Giroud stays fit for next season as they need to have a better run in the first half if they want to think about Premier League glory.
