Opinion: It’s high time that Leicester’s promising 22-year-old speedster steps up for Brendan Rodgers

Leicester City opinion: It’s time for Demarai Gray to step up for the Foxes

Leicester City have a good group of players at their disposal but they are far from perfect, as witnessed this season. The Foxes spent very smartly over the summer, with reinforcements in key areas, including the likes of James Maddison, Ricardo Pereira and Jonny Evans.

They’ve proven to be big hits, but that hasn’t been the problem for Leicester City. Their main issue is with their wide players. Under Claude Puel, the club played a very defensive system, which didn’t help their form.

But with Brendan Rodgers’ arrival, things have certainly changed, with the club losing just one of their last five games. Yet, the wingers haven’t contributed enough, including Harvey Barnes, who has performed well but has struggled in front of goal.

But the biggest disappointment this season has been Demarai Gray. The 22-year-old arrived at the club after impressing with Birmingham City. However, with Riyad Mahrez occupying his favoured right-wing spot, it made things difficult.

Gray had to make a sacrifice and play as a left-winger or come off the bench and make an impact. That has hurt his development more than he expected and it has shown this season. With Mahrez leaving for Manchester City, the Foxes needed Gray to step in.

But the 22-year-old has failed to deliver, with just 4 goals and 1 assist so far this season including just two goals since the turn of the year.

He’s only managed to average 1.5 shots, 0.5 key passes and a passing accuracy of only 78% per game. He’s 12th in the club’s list for key passes, and only two players have been dispossessed more often for Leicester City, which just shows just how much the 22-year-old has struggled this season.

With the season coming to an end, Gray really needs to start pulling up his socks and perform. Leicester City have trusted him this season but he’s failed to produce sufficiently for the club.

Conclusion

Demarai Gray needs to improve going forward and the statistics prove that it’s now or never for him. The 22-year-old is at a precocious stage of his career and if he doesn’t step up, then things can go horribly wrong.
