Arsenal’s Aubameyang vs Man City’s Aguero: Stats comparison shows the veteran has outperformed the Gabonese ace by a narrow margin

Player comparison: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang vs Sergio Aguero

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sergio Aguero have been two of the biggest names in world football in recent years. The two number 9’s have been banging goals for their clubs for a few years but now that the duo is competing against each other for the Golden Boot, let’s take a deeper look at their numbers.

Aguero leads the goal scoring charts in the Premier League this season with 18 goals so far but the Arsenal man isn’t far behind, having scored 16 himself. The Argentine also has 6 assists this season, 2 more than Aubameyang. But when the pair’s statistics per 90 minutes are compared, it’s a lot closer than expected.

Aubameyang averages 4.81 shots on goal per game this season, narrowly behind Aguero’s 5. The Arsenal man, however, has a better shooting accuracy of 42% than Aguero’s 38%. Aubameyang’s shot conversion rate of 22% is also higher than Aguero’s 19% but the Gabonese has missed 19 big chances so far this season.

Aguero started off the season slowly but went on an insane scoring spree which included 8 goals in 5 games. He has scored three hattricks already this campaign, something Aubameyang has failed to do since coming to England. Aguero has hit the woodwork 6 times this season, twice as many times as Aubameyang.

Both Aubameyang and Aguero have scored two penalties each so far this season but Aubameyang’s off-the-ball work has been more important than the Argentine’s. Aubameyang’s difference in numbers to Aguero could be due to the fact that he has played most of his games on the left wing.

Aubameyang has better tackles, interceptions, clearances and headed clearances than Aguero but the former Atletico Madrid forward takes the plaudits when it comes to interceptions. Aguero has committed 19 fouls this term compared to Aubameyang’s 16 and he has 3 yellow cards to his name compared to Aubameyang’s none.

Aguero has also been caught offside more times than the Arsenal and Aubameyang makes more runs with the ball into the box than Aguero.

Conclusion

Sergio Aguero’s numbers are mostly superior to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s but the margin between the stats is narrow.

The Argentine has been prolific but the former Borussia Dortmund man’s position in over half his games has played a part. With 9 games to play, it is going to be a tight race for the Golden Boot and the Argentine’s form in the run has been far superior.

All things considered, the two forwards are the best in the league but if you had to pick one, it has got to be Sergio Aguero.
