Who Were the Poor Performers for Chelsea Last Night’s 1-3 Loss to Southampton?

Chelsea suffered their fourth league defeat in eight games and their second home defeat of the campaign as they fell 3-1 to Ronald Koeman’s well drilled Southampton side.

The home side started brightly and took the lead thanks to William’s brilliantly whipped free kick, but Southampton controlled the game from that point on and earned an equaliser just before halftime.

The visitors went for the jugular in the second half and demolished the Chelsea backline with an attractive brand of attacking football, to which Chelsea had no answers and eventually collapsed with little fight.

Here are the Chelsea Player ratings from a historic Southampton win at Stamford Bridge.

Asmir Begovic – 5

Excellent alertness to deny Ryan Bertrand in the first half, but could do little with the other goals. Needs more protecting from his defence.

Branislav Ivanovic – 3

Another shocking display from a full back who looks well past his best. Failed to contain Tadic in the second half.

Gary Cahill – 3

Casual defending led to Southampton’s second as the England man failed to clear his lines. Out-muscled by Pelle to set up Davis for the Saints’ equaliser.

John Terry – 4

Error in judgement from the Chelsea skipper put Mane through on goal for the second goal for Southampton.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 5

Defensively naive and offered little going forward.

Ramires – 5

Lucky to have escaped a penalty for a challenge on Mane in the first half. Booked and subbed off after 45 minutes.

Fabregas – 4

Lost Davis for the first goal and had little influence on the match in a defensive midfielder role.

Willian – 6

Only bright spark for the Blues early on. Excellent free kick but ineffective later on.

Oscar – 5

Busy throughout the match but failed to provide the spark when needed.

Eden Hazard

Hazard – 4

Gave the ball away for Southampton to break away and score a third to seal the game. Never looked like causing any problems to the visitors.

Falcao – 3

Correct decision by the referee to book the Columbian for a dive. Falcao looks a shadow of the player he once was. Chelsea desperately need Diego Costa back.

Substitutes

Matic – 4

Brought off after being subbed on at the start of the second half. Needs to up his game.

Pedro – 4

Failed to create any clear cut chances.

Remy – 5

Created a chance for Falcao in the latter stages.
