Atakayi joined the Light Blues back in 2016 on a three-year contract, later extended it until 2020.

The 20-year-old made his debut for the Gers in a 7-1 win against Motherwell.

He was then loaned to Finnish outfit SJK to acquire game time, and the spell ran until June.

Now, the Striker has said that ex-Liverpool star has promised him a place in the first-team next season.

Atakayi said, (h/t The Daily Record)

“I came to SJK because I need some playing time.

“Rangers saw this as the best solution for me. Steven Gerrard has told me he thinks I can play for the first team next season.”

He also expressed his love for the Light Blues’ attractive playing-style.

Eremenko, the manager of SJK,  is also impressed with the youngster’s  talent and growth.

He said, (h/t The Daily Record)

I have watched him play for Rangers too and he has hugely improved as a player.

“He is a very ambitious player and we can help him take the next step in his career.”

A Congolese by birth, Atakayi moved to Finland soon after, where he has made a handful number of appearances for the U-18 and U-19 team.

He previously had trials at Leicester City and Fulham before moving to Ibrox.

In fact, the Gers have made two productive signings in Alfredo Morelos and Glen Kamara from Finnish clubs.

Gerrard’s first season at Ibrox wasn’t quite enough as he couldn’t put a dent on Celtic’s domination.
