Rangers beating Celtic to land this PL outcast would make them rock solid at the back next season

Rangers FC opinion: Should the Gers make a move for Tomáš Kalas?

According to reports from Football Scotland, Scottish Premiership side the Rangers are keen on a move for Chelsea star Tomáš Kalas. The 26-year-old made quite an impact during his loan spell with Bristol City, with his value rising.

The sheer fact that the Gers need reinforcements, especially defensive reinforcements means that the move makes a lot of sense. While Kalas did join Chelsea in 2010, he’s made only four senior appearances for the Blues, spending most of his time on loan.

This includes spells at FC Koln, Middlesbrough, and more recently at Fulham. It was there that Kalas really impressed, showing an affinity for the Championship during his two years with the club, playing a big role as they got promoted.

This saw Bristol City make a move, with the 26-year-old finishing last season on loan with the Robins and impressing with them. However, what will and should attract the Rangers to the Czech Republic star is the fact that he is an all-action defender.

Not only does Tomáš Kalas excel as a ball-playing centre-back but the 26-year-old also uses his athleticism to stop moves before they happen.

Time and loan spells all around the world have made him tactically astute and able to adjust to any manager’s style of play and tactics, which is an even bigger boost for the Rangers.

Furthermore, his aforementioned athleticism allows him to play across the defensive line, even as a full-back if needed, which could come useful. It’s what manager Steven Gerrard needs in his side and it could be a stop-gap solution.

Not only that, given their defensive issues last season, the Rangers need someone like Kalas on their books. Simply because their defence consists of 39-year-old Gareth McAuley, Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson, which isn’t good news.

Both Katic and Goldson did do well last season, but McAuley’s age has seen his skills deteriorate so badly that a move should have never been made in the first place. Not to mention, barring that the Rangers have no centre-backs.

And if they ever want to catch up or even chase their eternal rivals then that needs to change this summer.

Conclusion

Rangers need reinforcements and someone like Tomáš Kalas would be absolutely perfect and not just because Celtic are in the race.

Sure, outdoing them to a good centre-back would be a plus point but the sheer fact that Kalas would be a brilliant signing should be the first thing on their mind.
