Rangers signing this £18.5m PL star on loan would help them bridge the gap on Celtic next season – opinion

Rangers opinion – Gers considering loan move for Andre Gray – Good choice?

According to a report in Herald Scotland, Scottish giants Rangers are considering a loan move for Watford striker Andre Gray, as Steven Gerrard aims to better his squad for the next season.

With the Gers already looking active in terms of adding assets to their armoury, it feels that they mean business (h/t Herald Scotland).

They have Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie, while Greg Stewart will complete the switch when his contract expires with Birmingham City in the summer (h/t Herald Scotland).

On top of all that, the club is now looking to add more firepower to their forward line, and Watford’s Gray has been summoned as an option for a loan deal (h/t Herald Scotland).

The 27-year-old arrived at Vicarage Road two summers ago for a club-record fee of £18.5m (h/t BBC). Since then, he has scored 12 goals in 58 appearances and played as a support role to Troy Deeney more often than not.

Here’s why Rangers would do the right thing by signing him on a loan deal:

Gray’s firepower up front would be good for the Gers

If we look at the options Rangers have up front, only Jermaine Defoe remains the first-choice striker. Despite signing a contract extension, Alfredo Morelos is expected to leave the club, while Kyle Lafferty has been out for some time now.

Hence, relying on a 36-year-old striker for the whole season wouldn’t be a good idea. Moreover, the manager would need a backup striker to support on a regular basis.

For that reason, adding someone like Andre Gray to their squad would mean instilling power to the front-line. Furthermore, the Englishman is not bad when it comes to finishing his chances and can also operate as a support striker if required.

Conclusion

With everything mentioned above, it is clear why Rangers would need a striker in the summer transfer window. Therefore, signing Gray should really help them in the upcoming season.
