Report: Aston Villa plot swoop for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle

The 28-year-old has returned to the Premier League after spending a successful loan spell with West Bromwich Albion.

Despite losing to Derby County in the Championship playoffs, the Baggies benefitted well from Gayle, who bagged an eye-catching 26-goal tally across all competitions.

An academy graduate of Arsenal, Gayle spent half of his career with bottom-tier clubs before joining Magpies in 2016.

Over the course of the season he has bagged a total of 29 goals as a Magpies player.

Why should Villa move for Gayle?

The Lions earned their promotion to Premire League by defeating Derby County in the playoffs final.

Dean Smith’s men revived themselves after going through a slight dip in form at the start of this year.

Tammy Abraham was pivotal for the Villans in their successful run and has bagged a record-breaking goal tally of 26, being his side’s focal point.

However, the Chelsea-bound striker is due to make a Stamford Bridge return this summer, leaving the Lions in plight.

At the same time, Smith is in need of reinforcement, especially a quality centre-forward given that the Lions will play in England’s top-tier next season.

Gayle would certainly replicate his success at Villa Park as he did with the Magpies. And he also can strike up a great partnership with Anwar El Ghazi in the attacking lineup.
