“Rom FC”, “Give Ole the job”: Some Man United fans exhilarated after intense 3-2 win vs Southampton + Match Report

Manchester United vs Southampton report: Manchester United match report

Romelu Lukaku scored an 89th-minute winner to help Manchester United overcome Southampton 3-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side moved into fourth place in the Premier League after recovering from a thunderbolt strike from Yan Valery with goals from Andreas Pereira and a brace from Romelu Lukaku.

Manchester United started the game on front foot, with Lukaku twice denied by excellent stops from Angus Gunn. But after Southampton had a penalty claim turned down for Chris Smalling’s tug on Ryan Bertrand, the visitors took the lead against the run of play.

Charlie Austin released Yan Valery down the right and the youngster collected the ball in space before hammering a 25-yard shot into the roof of David De Gea’s net on the 26th minute.

Smalling and Lukaku both missed good chances to level before half-time, while Alexis Sanchez added to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s injury worries when he hobbled off shortly after the break.

Sanchez was replaced by Diogo Dalot, who made an instant impact after arriving on the pitch as five minutes later as Andreas Pereira curled a magnificent effort into the top corner for his first Premier League goal. Five minutes later, the Red Devils were ahead after Lukaku fired in low into the bottom corner.

After 75 minutes, Young was adjudged to have fouled Southampton substitute Stuart Armstrong 30 yards from goal that gave James Ward-Prowse a chance to level the matter. And he stepped up big time, drilling a glorious free-kick over the wall and into the top corner to stun the home fans.

But there was to be the last twist in the tail as Lukaku broke the Saints hearts with a brilliant low finish to snatch all three points. While there was still time for United to make it 4-2, Pogba missed a stoppage-time penalty.
