How Long Has Ruesha Littlejohn Been Banned for After Wild Takedown as FA Deems Standard Punishment “Clearly Insufficient”

Ruesha Littlejohn will serve a five-match suspension after the FA successfully argued that the standard three-game ban for violent conduct was “clearly insufficient” following her red card incident with Leicester City‘s Hannah Cain.
The Crystal Palace midfielder was sent off in the 58th minute of a Women’s League Cup clash on November 23 after what social media described as a “WWE-style takedown” of Cain. Despite Littlejohn denying the FA’s claim that her offense warranted extended punishment, the regulatory commission upheld the decision on Friday.
The FA’s statement confirmed: “The standard punishment for violent conduct is a three-match ban, but the FA claimed that this penalty is clearly insufficient, and Ruesha Littlejohn subsequently denied this claim. The regulatory commission upheld the claim; set aside the standard punishment and imposed the five-match suspension following a hearing.”
What Actually Happened?
The incident unfolded after Leicester’s Olivia McLoughlin tangled with Crystal Palace’s Annabel Blanchard. Cain stepped in between the pair to defuse the situation, prompting Littlejohn to nudge her. Cain responded with a push to the back of the Republic of Ireland midfielder.
Littlejohn then grabbed Cain around the head and wrestled her to the ground in full view of the officials. Despite the red card, Crystal Palace still won 3-0 to reach the League Cup quarter-finals.
Littlejohn: “I Let My Emotions Spill Over“
Speaking at a Republic of Ireland press conference, the 35-year-old admitted she regrets the incident. “I’m quite an emotional person and player. That’s not who I want to be on the pitch, so I will learn from it and move forward,” Littlejohn said.
Ireland head coach Carla Ward defended her player while condemning the online abuse she’s received since. “She’s a human being. She’s someone’s daughter and sister. It’s not okay,” Ward said. “Some of the stuff I’ve seen this week has been disgusting.”
Ward’s comments came after Keira Walsh revealed that the majority of WSL players have received online abuse.
Fixtures Littlejohn Will Miss
The extended ban means Littlejohn will miss Crystal Palace’s WSL 2 clashes with Birmingham City, Bristol City and Sheffield United in the new year, plus their FA Cup tie with Lewes and a League Cup quarter-final against Arsenal. The commission will explain its decision in writing in due course.

Finland international joins Birmingham City Women on loan until end of season

Birmingham City Women have secured the signing of Finland international Lotta Lindström on loan from London City Lionesses for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.
The forward arrives at St Andrew’s after establishing herself as one of the WSL’s most promising young attackers since joining London City in February 2024.
Lindström was Finland’s top-flight leading goalscorer with 17 goals in 23 appearances before her move to England. She made her senior debut for Finland in December 2023 during the UEFA Women’s Nations League and has since accumulated eight appearances for her country.
Ambitious Move to Championship Leaders
The 21 year old expressed her excitement at joining Birmingham City, who are chasing promotion back to the WSL. “I’m really excited to be here and get started with the team. I think it’s a really nice club with big ambitions and I want to be part of achieving those goals the club have set,” Lindström told bcfc.com.
Birmingham currently sit top of the Championship table as they look to secure an immediate return to the top flight following relegation last season. The addition of Lindström strengthens their attacking options significantly as they push for promotion.
Proven Goalscorer Adds Firepower
Lindström’s impressive scoring record in Finland demonstrates her ability to find the net consistently. Her loan move provides Birmingham with experienced firepower during the crucial second half of the season as they battle for promotion.
London City Lionesses will hope the loan spell benefits Lindström’s development while Birmingham gain a proven goalscorer. The deal represents smart business for all parties involved as the Finland international seeks regular playing time to continue her progression at international and club level.

Matildas Star Amy Sayer Signs With Swedish Club Malmo FF on Three Year Deal

Australian midfielder Amy Sayer officially completed her transfer to Swedish club Malmo FF on January 5, 2026. The 24-year-old midfielder signed a three year contract after spending three years in Sweden with Kristianstads DFF.
Sayer joins fellow Matildas international Courtney Nevin at Malmo, reuniting the pair after Nevin signed in August 2025. Sayer rejected interest from multiple WSL clubs including Liverpool to commit to the Swedish giants.
Rejection of English Football Opportunities
Sayer had been heavily pursued by WSL clubs during January’s transfer window but chose Swedish football over English options. Liverpool in particular had targeted the midfielder aggressively given their relegation struggles.
However Sayer expressed commitment to winning the Damallsvenskan title after three years in Sweden developing her craft at Kristianstads. She told Malmo’s official website that winning the league was her primary objective. Maxim Khalil, Malmo’s sports director, praised her technical qualities and physical attributes making her ideal for Swedish football’s demands.
The Kristianstads Foundation
Sayer arrived in Sweden in 2023 after completing her Stanford University studies. She made 22 appearances for Kristianstads scoring three goals and providing three assists during her time at the club. Her consistent performances earned her breakthrough into the Matildas senior squad earning 19 caps and four international goals. Sayer represents the modern Australian player pathway through college football to European competition.
The Nevin Connection
Courtney Nevin’s earlier Malmo signing facilitated Sayer’s move to the Swedish club. Playing alongside a familiar national team teammate provides immediate comfort and continuity. Both players understand Swedish football’s tactical demands and physical intensity.
Nevin scored her first Malmo goal during the 2025 season establishing herself at the club. Sayer joins a Damallsvenskan title challenging side positioned in the top three after finishing third in 2025.
The Matildas will monitor Sayer’s development at Malmo heading toward the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in March 2026.

Juventus Women Midfielder Elsa Pelgander Joins Djurgarden on Permanent Transfer After Year Long Loan Spell in Sweden

Elsa Pelgander has joined Djurgarden on a permanent transfer from Juventus Women after spending the past year on loan at the Swedish club. The 19 year old midfielder leaves Turin having made eight appearances for the Bianconeri first team across all competitions since joining in January 2024.
Pelgander’s move to Djurgarden was made official on January 3, bringing an end to her spell in Italy. The Swedish youth international also featured in several Primavera matches during her time at Juventus, gaining valuable development experience with the club’s academy teams.
Limited First Team Opportunities
The teenager struggled to break into Juventus’ first team on a regular basis, making just eight senior appearances over 12 months. Her loan move to Djurgarden provided more consistent playing time in familiar surroundings as she returned to Swedish football.
Juventus wished Pelgander well for the future after finalizing the permanent transfer. The club has been active in the transfer market with several comings and goings, including the high profile signing of Switzerland captain Lia Wälti from Arsenal in September 2025.
Return to Swedish Football
The permanent move allows Pelgander to establish herself at Djurgarden after her successful loan spell. The Stockholm based club compete in the Damallsvenskan, Sweden’s top division, where the midfielder will look to develop her career at a higher level than the Primavera.
Juventus Women currently sit in Serie A Femminile’s top positions as they chase domestic and European success. The departure of Pelgander frees up space in their squad as manager Joe Montemurro continues building his team for the second half of the season.
Djurgarden will hope Pelgander can make an immediate impact when Swedish football resumes following the winter break.
