Scouting For Klopp: 3 Highly Rated Defenders Liverpool Could Look To Sign Before The Transfer Window Shuts

Liverpool’s initial struggles last season led to the sacking of Brendan Rodgers, in his place the board brought in Jurgen Klopp. The arrival of the German manager was by far the best signing Liverpool made last season. Klopp took his team two cup finals in the space of six months, unfortunately for him, the Reds couldn’t cross the last hurdle. However, even with those two disappointing performances, there were enough encouraging signs throughout last season for Liverpool fans to be positive about their clubs future.

Next season, the expectations will be huge from Klopp’s men, he has had a full preseason under his belt along with the resources to bring in the necessary the reinforcements. Though Liverpool have signed quality players like Sadio Mane and Wijnaldum, there are still some gaps at the back that need to be filled before the season kicks off on August 14th at the Emirates stadium against Arsenal. Currently, Alberto Moreno is the only proper left back in the squad and even he suffered a mild injury in Liverpool’s last preseason game, therefore a signing in that department is urgently required. Here are the three defenders Liverpool can target over the next month as they get ready to mount a proper challenge for the top four places.

Jonas Hector

Liverpool have reportedly reignited their interest in Jonas Hector following Moreno’s latest injury. The Koln defender was part of the German national team that reached the semi-final of the recently concluded European Championship. He has been brilliant at the club level over the past few years and is definitely an upgrade over Moreno. He is not only a consistent performer on the pitch but also has an excellent record when it comes to injuries. His height makes him a threat in the air too, something Klopp will definitely keep in mind. At 2  6 years of age, Hector is entering the peak of his career and it would be a perfect time to move to a club of Liverpool’s size.

Thomas Vermaelen

After seeing his career graph dip following his move to Barcelona from Arsenal, it has been reported that Vermaelen is keen to leave the Spanish Champions. Vermaelen is a versatile defender, who can even play as a full-back if the situation demands it. He is a ball-playing centre-back who operates on the front foot, suiting Klopp’s high-pressing system. Although he has struggled with injuries over the past few years, still the former Ajax defender would provide a solid, experienced backup option.

Ricardo Rodriguez

Rodriguez is a quality left back, who will bring a lot of solidity to the Liverpool back-line. The Swiss international has been linked with numerous clubs this summer, however, nothing has concretized as of yet. He was excellent for the Swiss national team during the Euros and is reportedly on the look for a new club following four successful years at Wolfsburg. The 23-year-old is physically very strong and dominant in the air. His experience could be very useful in a relatively young Liverpool defense line.
