Sheffield United signing this Romanian U-21 star would get them a gem of a talent to work with

Sheffield United Opinion: The Blades should go for George Puscas

According to the Star, Sheffield United have made an offer to Palermo striker George Puscas. The 23-year-old is currently at the European Under-21 Championships with Romania. He scored the opener for his country in the recent 4-2 win over England.

George Puscas joined Palermo from Inter Milan last summer after managing just seven appearances for the Nerazzurri in his five-year stay. He enjoyed a decent season with Palermo in the Serie B, scoring nine goals and supplying three assists in 33 appearances.

The 23-year-old’s performances with Palermo coupled with his current form for Romania in the European Under-21 Championships should have prompted Sheffield United in making a bid for the striker.

The Blades are yet to make a signing in this summer transfer window after achieving promotion from the Championship last season. Chris Wilder has a limited budget this summer, which means he’ll have to wisely spend the money while recruiting players.

He needs a bigger squad than the one he had in the Championship last season to stay in the Premier League beyond the 2019/20 campaign. The Sheffield United boss must prioritise strengthening his options in the forward department, with Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick the only recognised centre-forwards.

Both Sharp and McGoldrick are on the wrong side of 30 as well; so a young, dynamic and energetic striker must arrive at Bramall Lane this summer.

Puscas fits the profile of the striker Wilder is certainly searching for in the transfer market. Wilder mostly plays a 3-4-1-2 system with a number 10 behind two strikers.

Puscas’ versatility of playing as a secondary striker or in the no.10 role would make him a valuable addition for the Blades. He is sort of player who loves to make runs in behind the defenders and finish off chances in the blink of an eye.

Standing at 6ft 2in, the Romanian is also a threat in the box from dead ball situations and his aerial ability coupled with pace, dynamism, work rate and versatility should make him an ideal fit for Wilder’s system at Bramall Lane.

Not only will he give a different dimension to the Blades’ attack, but also add much-needed competition for the likes of Sharp and McGoldrick.

Verdict

Puscas is currently tearing the European Under-21 Championships and a switch to the Premier League is likely to be very tempting for him. He may take time to adapt to the English game but the Romanian is exciting and could prove to be a smart long-term investment for Sheffield United.
