Sheffield United signing this Arsenal star on loan would be a huge coup by Chris Wilder

Why Sheffield United should go all out for Arsenal’s Calum Chambers

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, newly-promoted Sheffield United are eyeing up a loan move for Arsenal defender Calum Chambers.

Calum Chambers spent last season on loan at Fulham in the Premier League as the London club finished 19th and were relegated back to the Championship. He was one of the very few players to come out of the season with any credit.

Sheffield United have been pretty busy in the summer transfer window following their promotion to England’s top-flight. They have already signed a host of players this summer, including top Championship players Oli McBurnie, Callum Robinson and Luke Freeman.

The club have also added some much-needed Premier League experience to their side, in the form of Phil Jagielka and Lys Mousset.

With the transfer deadline looming large, it appears as if Chris Wilder isn’t done with his transfer business just yet. His interest in Calum Chambers means the Blades boss isn’t convinced with his defence ahead of the new campaign.

The addition of Jagielka could prove to be an inspired signing for Sheffield United but they can still do with a bit more depth in the squad.

That makes their interest in Chambers a sensible one. Chambers is a versatile player who is capable of playing at centre-back, right-back and holding midfield. He put his versatility to brilliant effect last season at Fulham, where he was deployed as a centre-back as well as in central midfield.

The 24-year-old has made 83 appearances across all competitions since joining the Gunners from Southampton in 2014, but he has struggled to nail down a place in the first-team, which subsequently led to loan moves to Middlesbrough and Fulham in recent years.

The Englishman, however, now needs to find a club to settle down as he’ll be entering the prime years of his career.

A move to Sheffield United would be perfect for Chambers. With his tough-tackling, brilliant passing range and ability to remain composed in pressure situations, the 24-year-old would slot seamlessly into Wilder’s system at Bramall Lane.

The ex-Southampton starlet would add a lot of value due to his age, quality and experience, and Wilder could solve multiple problems with a single signing this summer.

Verdict

However, any deal would depend on what Arsenal do over the next few days. If Unai Emery can bring in a new central defender to bolster his squad, he will be able to sanction a move for Chambers to Sheffield United.

If not, then Chambers must stay at the Emirates and fight for a place in Emery’s starting XI.
