Sheffield Wednesday offering their 26-year-old star a new deal could turn out to be quite useful

Why Sheffield Wednesday should offer Joey Pelupessy a new deal

According to Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Joey Pelupessy has expressed his desire to extend his stay at Hillsborough beyond the end of the ongoing season, with his contract set to expire next summer.

The 26-year-old has admitted that he is enjoying his football with the Owls and wants to be a part of the club’s long-term plans moving forward, having settled down well in his new surroundings in England (h/t Sheffield Star).

Pelupessy, who shot to prominence with FC Twente and Heracles Almelo in the Dutch Eredivisie earlier in his career, moved to Sheffield Wednesday in January 2018 during the reign of his compatriot Jos Luhukay. He has made a total of 59 appearances for the Owls in all competitions thus far.

The former Netherlands U20 international started 17 games in the Championship during the latter half of the 2017-18 campaign and followed it up with another 26 league starts in the following season.

However, the defensive midfielder is yet to establish himself as a regular fixture under new manager Garry Monk, with the 26-year-old only starting twice in the Championship so far.

Pelupessy started both the EFL Cup fixtures for the Owls against Rotherham United and Everton but his limited involvement in the Championship does look troubling.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have laid down an early marker and are one of the playoff favourites following a bright start to the campaign.

To put things into perspective, Joey Pelupessy might not have started every game under Monk this season but the Dutchman has proven to be a useful player in the middle of the park since his arrival. Thus, Sheffield Wednesday should not hesitate to offer him an extension.

As per WhoScored, Pelupessy averaged 1.9 tackles and 1.2 interceptions while managing a pass success rate of 83.1% in the Championship last season. These numbers do reveal that he is a decent central midfielder with a good engine, an impressive range of passing and an innate ability to cut out attacks.

The Dutchman still has plenty of years left in his prime. That said, there seems to be no valid reason as to why the Owls would want to part ways with him next summer.

Verdict

Joey Pelupessy needs to prove his worth with his performances over the course of this season. In doing so, the Owls would have enough evidence to make a smart decision.

In other words, this could be a make-or-break season for the Dutchman as far as his future at Hillsborough is concerned.
