Why Signing Former Liverpool Winger Suso Would Be A Total Blunder By Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have not been able to make a strong start to their transfer window as they are yet to announce their first signing of the summer. Spurs missed out on the league title for the second year running and it will be important for Mauricio Pochettino to improve the squad to be able to take the next step.

This has seen them get linked with a variety of stars recently and one player extensively linked with a move to the club is AC Milan winger Suso. Born and brought up in Cadiz, Spain, the 23-year old moved to English outfit Liverpool as a teenager. Though he broke into the first team under Brendan Rodgers, he failed to establish himself at the club, making just 14 appearances at Anfield during his stay.

He was sold to Italian outfit AC Milan in what was the final transfer window for Brendan Rodgers but Suso took the swap well and has made a name for himself already in Italy. He picked up 7 goals and 9 assists last season in 35 league games, establishing himself as a first team option. But with AC Milan now adding some superstars with their influx of finances, the Spaniard might not find a place in the starting XI there next season.

The Serie A outfit is however, adamant to keep hold of the youngster and have reportedly rejected a £19.5m bid from Spurs. They might be willing to sell for around £25m but should Tottenham meet the valuation?

Suso

Known for his versatility in the final third, Suso is an expansive dribbler with exceptional technique with the ball at his feet. He is a sublime finisher, who can score long-rangers consistently and though he is not too strong in the air, he is an excellent option to have in the attack.

At 23, and capable of playing as a winger and also as an attacking midfielder, he looks to be a decent fit for Pochettino’s recruitment model and his system. But for a club that needs to take the next step in Europe, Suso is just not the right man.

Spurs already have Eric Lamela, Moussa Sissoko and Kevin N’Koudou for this role and though one of them might yet quit the club, they will need a more established option, who can walk into the first team next season. Suso is going to increase the competition for places, but it is hard to see him start regularly for a club competing for the Premier League title, even with his previous experience in the league.

Tottenham should avoid signing Suso in what could be a transfer blunder by the Lilywhites.
