Southampton signing this 23-year-old Bundesliga striker would go a long way in helping them avoid relegation this season

Why Southampton should go all out to sign Davie Selke in January

According to Daily Mirror on their transfer blog, Hertha Berlin striker Davie Selke is on top of Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s January transfer list.

Davie Selke, 23, who played under Ralph Hasenhuttl at RB Leipzig, moved to Hertha Berlin at the start of last season – in which he scored 10 goals from 27 league outings. But this time around, he has been used as a substitute instead. In fact, 10 of his 12 Bundesliga appearances have come from the bench as the 23-year-old has managed only a goal.

It is becoming increasingly unlikely for Southampton to stay in the Premier League next season. The Saints lost their first game under the tutelage of Hasenhuttl against Cardiff City last weekend, leaving the sea coast side in 19th place and three points from safety in the Premier League.

Hasenhuttl, a renowned tactician, has been appointed to save Southampton’s ship from sinking but unless he brings in a couple of new players next month, the chances of the club beating the drop look very slim. Given the Saints’ defensive problems this season, a defender has to be Hasenhuttl’s priority in the winter transfer window but he must not ignore bolstering his attacking unit as well.

Southampton have an array of attackers but none of them have fired on all cylinders this season. For now, Hasenhuttl has to rely on the options he has at his disposal but in January, he should go all out to sign Davie Selke.

Selke has underwhelmed in front of the goal so far this season for Hertha but there is no doubting his ability and technique to find the back of the net consistently. His vision is impressive and he could seriously aid Southampton with their struggles in front of the goal.

Standing at almost 6ft 5in, the 23-year-old is an absolute monster of a centre-forward who likes to dominate the opposition with his physicality. He is excellent in the air and has a decent turn of pace to beat the defenders. An instinctive centre-forward by trade, he can hold up the play well and bring his teammates into the game. The former German Under-21 international is a good reader of the game and has the physical attributes to thrive in the Premier League.

To put things into perspective, Selke would be an ideal signing for Hasenhuttl’s Southampton. The Saints are struggling to score goals at the moment and the addition of the German forward will add some much-needed firepower to boost their chances of avoiding relegation from the top-flight.
