Southampton signing this 26-year-old African star would get them a perfect partner for Vestergaard

Southampton Opinion: Why the Saints should go for Wilfried Kanon

Back in May, the Sun claimed that Southampton were one of the clubs tracking Den Haag defender Wilfried Kanon ahead of a potential summer move.

Kanon, 26, joined Den Haag back in 2013 from Romania outfit Corona Brasov and after a slow start to life in the Netherlands, he has slowly become one of their key players.

He made 20 starts and one substitute appearance in the Eredivisie for ADO Den Haag this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the process.

The Ivory Coast international is a solid defender and he is at an ideal stage of his career to make a move to play in Europe’s bigger leagues. Southampton could be the ideal place for Kanon’s development as Ralph Hasenhuttl aims to have a solid 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

The Saints must prioritise signing a new centre-back this summer, given their backline woes during the last campaign that saw them boast a poor defensive record in the Premier League, conceding 65 goals in the process.

The likes of Maya Yoshida and Jannik Vestergaard struggled last season, while Wesley Hoedt was shipped out on loan to Celta Vigo in January. Jan Bednarek was the only bright spark in central defence as Hasenhuttl’s side somehow managed to avoid relegation.

The summer transfer window has given Hasenhuttl a chance to make an impression over his squad and while he has brought in some attacking reinforcements, it is high time for the Southampton boss to address the biggest problem of his squad – the defence.

To put things into perspective, Bednarek needs a reliable partner in defence and Wilfried Kanon could be that man for the Saints. Kanon is a solid, no-nonsense, hardworking and reliable defender who can work his magic in the air as well, making him an asset during set-piece situations.

The biggest asset of his game is his strength and aerial ability, which helps him compete with the physically imposing forwards. The Ivorian is also composed with the ball at his feet and is excellent in the tackle as well.

To add, Kanon has the attributes to thrive in the Premier League. He could be a very good addition to the Southampton side and at a cut-price £3million valuation, he will be a low-risk investment.

Verdict

Thus, the Saints must not hesitate to make a move for Kanon. For £3million, he could prove to be a bargain deal for the club.
