Southampton signing this in-form Premier League beast would make them a real force next season – opinion

Southampton opinion: Saints should make a move for Aleksandar Mitrovic

Southampton only just managed to survive the Premier League this season. Things were so bad for the Saints that at one point, they were amongst the favourites to get relegated alongside Huddersfield Town. But the addition of Ralph Hasenhuttl changed things for the better.

With a few unconventional moves, the former RB Leipzig boss made a big difference to the team and started playing more positive football. Unlike Mark Hughes, who simply sent out a team of players and hoped for the best. Instead, a change of tactics and an injection of hope for a few players really changed things around for the club.

Form improved and alongside that so did their position in the league, with the club now on par to finish the season as high as 15th place if results go their way. That’s a phenomenal change but for a club like Southampton, they really shouldn’t be in a situation like this in the first place.

Even on their worst days, the Saints are a mid-table side, not a relegation-threatened side. It shows just what changes need to be made and with the summer window quickly approaching, exactly where they can make said changes. The first thing the club needs before anything else is another striker.

Danny Ings has done well for himself since the move and is the club’s top goalscorer with seven goals. However, few others have contributed, which is why the Express has reported that the Saints are keen on a move for Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The 24-year-old has had a decent season in the Premier League, and with Fulham are relegated, he will walk away as one of their bright lights. Their top goalscorer by a large margin, Mitrovic has finished the season with an impressive 11 goals so far.

He has outscored every single Southampton player this season but it’s his other qualities that make him brilliant for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s style of play. The German manager likes possession-based football but is very flexible when needed, playing on the counter against the bigger sides.

However, to win games you need goals and as mentioned above,  barring Danny Ings, few others have contributed. Aleksandar Mitrovic, on the other hand, is an aggressive centre-forward and flourishes in either system. It’s a big part of why he has been targeted by Tottenham, as they look for a back-up to Harry Kane.

But with Southampton offering the lure of regular football it gives them an edge. That is something they need to take full advantage of, especially if the Saints want to continue in the Premier League.

Conclusion

Aleksandar Mitrovic is a reliable goalscorer and that is more than what can be said about Charlie Austin after his season. The Serbian striker would be a fantastic addition to Southampton. Under Hasenhuttl, there is a chance he can take things to another level.
