Southampton snapping up a deal for Fulham’s promotion star would be a shrewd move by Hasenhuttl

Why signing Marcus Bettinelli would be the right move for Southampton

A top keeper is a priority for all premier league sides today because of the attacking quality on display when going up against any team in the league.

Over the course of the season so far, Spanish international Sergio Rico replaced shot-stopper Marcus Bettinelli as the first-choice goalkeeper for Fulham. Considering that Bettinelli had a rather brilliant start to the season, it came as a surprise when Rico took over in goal.

In fact, Bettinelli’s start to the season was so good that he got a first international call-up in September and was a part of the squad for the following international fixtures. If he aims to continue representing his country, it seems like he would have to look for a move away from the West London outfit.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Southampton believe that various premier league rivals are eyeing a move for the Saints’ first-choice shot-stopper Alex McCarthy and have hence begun looking for replacements despite having Angus Gunn in their ranks.

The report suggests that Southampton are keen on the signature of Bettinelli in the fear that McCarthy might be on his way out of the club. The fact that he is an England international and would fit the ‘homegrown player’ bill is another advantageous aspect for all suitors.

Bettinelli signed a contract extension with Fulham at the start of the season but despite this, Rico rooted him from his starting spot over the course of the last few weeks.

Bettinelli is an orthodox-style goalkeeper who has made 7 appearances for Fulham so far this season – all 7 coming in the Premier League. He is quite adept at handling the ball and prefers to come off his line to try and smother the ball rather than stay at the goal line.

He is capable of launching absolutely monstrous goal kicks with his right foot and has a keen eye for the runners who break free. Crucial for Fulham in the 2017/18 season, Bettinelli played a huge part in the campaign that saw Fulham get promoted back to the top division of English football.

He started his footballing career with Fulham, signing his first professional contract in the summer of 2010.

Undoubtedly a quality goalkeeper, Bettinelli will be a really good alternative to guard the goal at St.Mary’s Stadium in case of the departure Alex McCarthy’s departure.
