Spurs Must Be Ice Cold In The Summer And Sign Chilwell

Things seem to get worse for Spurs as time goes on, with their poor run of form continuing from last season into this. Their Champions League adventure which saw them lose in the final to Liverpool perhaps masked what had been a troubled backend to the 18/19 campaign, and 19/20 isn’t going any better. There is no doubt the club’s supporters will be hoping for an upturn in player performances as well as results. And what will give everyone comfort is that most pundits agree with online betting operators in the UK that Spurs will finish in the Top 4.

Spurs undoubtedly have quality within their ranks, but an area which has been problematic for several seasons now is at full-back. The left-back slot, currently occupied by Danny Rose, is one people immediately point to as being an issue. And after Rose’s horror showing against Liverpool last time out, it again raises the question as to whether he’s still up to the job.

While manager Mauricio Pochettino can call on Ben Davies as well as Rose, neither have proven their worth when Spurs need them the most, and that’s why they should target Leicester City and England star Ben Chilwell in the summer. Chilwell, 22, has been on the Spurs radar previously, and the Bedford born ace is going from strength to strength with the Foxes. However, he has been tipped with a move away recently, with Manchester United said to be his preferred choice, so there is a chance Spurs could step in and make a move.

Leicester are flying this season under Brendan Rodgers, and some are thinking, more likely to finish in the top four than Spurs are. But if Daniel Levy was to loosen the purse strings and Pochettino was to overhaul his underperforming squad, it could be a project too good to turn down for Chilwell. The nine-time England cap is doing battle with Liverpool’s Andy Robertson to be the Premier League’s top left-back, and at 22 years old, he’s only going to get better.

Rodgers and Leicester would be against letting Chilwell leave, especially if they manage to secure Champions League football for next season, but if the money was right and the player expressed a desire to move on, it’s doubtful they would stand in his way. As things stand, Leicester are seemingly preparing for the worst case scenario as they look to accelerate Luke Thomas’ journey into the first team picture. Thomas, 18, has come through the Leicester City youth system, just like Chilwell, and stepped up from the U18s this summer to play with the U23s.

Signing Chilwell would be a significant statement of intent by Spurs, Pochettino and Levy, and it would give their fans the belief that the club is trying to progress once again. If Chilwell was to move on this summer and Spurs don’t enter the race to sign him, questions will once again arise where recruitment is concerned.

It’s highly likely that Danny Rose will move on this summer, with the former Leeds man on the verge of joining Watford in the summer just gone, but the deal fell through at the eleventh hour.
