Crystal Palace should sign this Bundesliga sensation with their eyes closed to help out their ageing backline

Crystal Palace opinion: Should the Eagles sign Martin Hinteregger?

According to a report from Sport Bild via Sky Sports, Crystal Palace are set to battle it out with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt for the signing of Augsburg’s Austrian defender Martin Hinteregger in the summer.

The 26-year-old spent the second half of the season on loan at Frankfurt where he was highly impressive and the report reveals that Die Adler are willing to use the money that they received from Luka Jovic’s sale to Real Madrid on the talented centre-half.

Frankfurt will certainly be the favourites to secure a permanent move for Hinteregger in the summer after having signed him on loan just six months ago. However, Crystal Palace will be making a massive statement if they can beat the Bundesliga outfit for his signature in the coming weeks.

Palace have had an up and down season in the Premier League but they have shown what they are capable of at times. Wilfried Zaha’s brilliance up front has been a massive boost but their defensive frailties had a huge impact over their eventual league position.

Palace could certainly have broken into the top half of the Premier League table if their defence was far tighter than it had been this season. Palace conceded 53 goals in the league last season, which is decent for a mid-table team but there have been a number of needless goals given away.

James Tomkins and Scott Dann are into their thirties, while Mamadou Sakho isn’t quite far off. The Eagles will need to bring in someone younger to partner up with Sakho next season and Martin Hinteregger would be a phenomenal signing.

A very calm and composed figure at the back, Hinteregger played 33 times in the Bundesliga for Augsburg and Frankfurt last season.

The Austrian’s solidity at the back helped his sides avoid defeat against Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund this season and his inclusion will play a huge part in helping Palace shut up shop next term.

Hinteregger is very good in the air despite only being an inch over six feet tall. His physicality suits the style of the Premier League and his ability to sense danger early makes him a very good centre-half for a club like Palace next season.

Conclusion

Martin Hinteregger would be a huge statement by Crystal Palace if they can manage to beat Frankfurt for his signature in the summer.

The 26-year-old is at the peak of his game and the Premier League is the perfect place for him to further develop into the top-class defender that he is capable of being in the near future.
