17 goals, 16 assists – West Ham should close their eyes and complete this £16m steal deal

West Ham United opinion: The Hammers should sign Fortounis

According to a report in the Sun, West Ham are looking to sign Olympiakos’ Kostas Fortounis. A £16m deal is under discussion.

The midfielder has been a regular in the last five years for the Greek giants after a spell in Germany with FC Kaiserslautern. Manuel Pellegrini had to chop and change his midfield constantly at the start of the season until he settled on Declan Rice and Mark Noble as his two starters.

Fortounis has the ability to add quality to West Ham’s midfield and support Declan Rice and Mark Noble in central midfield. Unlike Rice and Noble though, Fortounis is more of an attacking threat than the other two.

It is an area that Pellegrini is keen to develop, given Jack Wilshere missed most of last season, as his injury nightmares continue to haunt him at the Olympic stadium. Fortounis has just enjoyed a brilliant campaign at club level, scoring 17 goals and supplying 16 assists in return.

Fortounis is within their price range too and a player highly recommended by sporting director Mario Husillos according to the report.

This is of course due to the time spent in Olympiakos alongside him. With a year left on his contract at Olympiakos, he would be fairly easy to land. Fortounis has just enjoyed a brilliant campaign in the Europa League as well.

Conclusion

West Ham are working towards their European ambitions. Manuel Pellegrini is a top coach and he should be allowed to have the time and money to build a squad that can go places.

A signing like this will go a long way in helping that and would be a statement of real intent.
