“The match was boring but thanks for the win” – Fans React To Man Utd’s 1-0 Win + Match Report

Match Report: Southampton 0-1 Manchester United

Manchester United extended their unbeaten streak in the Premier League by beating Southampton 1-0 at the St. Mary’s stadium. The Red Devils now have 16 points in 6 games, which equals their best-ever points tally in the league at this point of the season, and certainly underlines their title credentials once again. The Old Trafford outfit is currently second in the English top division, trailing their neighbours Manchester City on goal difference.

The game began quietly and the first 15 minutes saw nothing except Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s weak shot being comfortably gathered by Fraser Forster. On the 20th minute mark, the deadlock was broken as Ashley Young managed to get the better of Dusan Tadic and put in a brilliant cross into the box for Romelu Lukaku.

Although the Belgian leapt the highest and got to the ball, his header was punched away by an excellent Fraser Forster. However, the goalkeeper could do nothing to save the rebound as it landed directly on Lukaku’s feet, who tapped it in with ease. It was the former Chelsea striker’s 8th goal in 8 games for United and he looks unstoppable right now.

After the goal, the game dulled down and United took control of it. Although they could not score another one, they looked calmed and composed.

After the break, Southampton tried to take charge of the situation and created chances again and again. Nathan Redmond and Ryan Bertrand were particularly dangerous on the left wing, while the occasional long ball to Shane Long up front also served as a good outlet.

However, the United defence in general and Phil Jones, in particular, stood resolutely and sniffed out any chances that the Saints created. Despite all this, Oriol Romeu could have handed Manuel Pellegrino’s side the all-important equaliser in the 78th minute after some stunning build-up play but he fluffed his lines.

As the game neared a nervy finish, United substitute Ander Herrera had a fantastic opportunity to kill the game off but despite having a lot of time on the ball, he shot well and high over the bar. Jose Mourinho was sent off to the stands a few minutes before the final whistle as he was interfering with Southampton’s substitutions and stepped out of his technical area far too many times. He may miss the next game against Crystal Palace, but the Red Devils proved that even when not at their best, they are certainly capable of pocketing all 3 points.
