These 3 left-backs are just what Barcelona need to provide cover for Jordi Alba – including this Euro U21 winner

Barcelona Opinion: Three left-backs who Barcelona should sign this summer

Barcelona have been dragging their feet in the transfer window so far as they have signed only Neto from Valencia, barring Frenkie de Jong, who agreed on a deal in principle with the Catalans earlier this year. (h/t The Guardian).

The necessity for bringing in reinforcements has been largely increased due to the incompetence in the results, especillay as a consequnce of the Champions League debacle. One of the positions that have been scrutinized heavily in recent times is the left-back void.

Primary choice Jordi Alba was deprived of backups last season and the situation took its toll when the 31-year-old put up a horror show in the Champions League semi-final defeat to Liverpool.

Keeping in mind that the Spaniard is already in his 30s, Barca should prioritize a move for a left-back and to have someone who could at least play second fiddle to Alba.

Filipe Luis

Having consistently been on the radar of the Catalans, Filipe Luis is no more a new face to the La Liga giants. The Brazilian veteran left-back is set to leave Atletico Madrid as a free agent.

The 31-year-old will bring a lot of experience to the table, given that he is a long-serving player for the Roji Blancos. He has represented Chelsea also.

However, Luis is a defensive minded left-back as he often shies away from getting into the attacking impetus. Nonetheless, he would be a great backup to Alba.

Junior Firpo

An excellent full-back in the making, Firpo has had an excellent first season with Real Betis and the Spanish national team, playing a helping hand in their Euro U21 win. His breakthrough season with Betis made him a transfer target for Barca.

Having blistering pace, great dribbling skills and sharp attacking intentions in his arsenal, it goes without saying that he is one of the hottest prospects in Europe right now.

Considering his age, Barca must sign him despite the sumptuous price tag but they have to convince him with enough game time at Nou Camp.

Alex Grimaldo

Another Blaugrana academy player, Alex Grimaldo has become an integral part of Benfica since joining them. His last season’s stats need to be looked at, as he bagged 7 goals and 12 assists.

Grimaldo, who is on the transfer radar of  Barca, would cost them around €40m.

However, the transfer relies on how the 23-year-old will be deployed at Barca, where Alba is high up the ranks.
