Arsenal were held to a goalless draw against Chelsea in the Premier League, while Chelsea came to the Emirates to do their job which was not to lose, Arsenal did not really have a lot of chances to win the game and were stifled quite well by the Chelsea team. The result effectively put an end to Arsenal’s slim chances of winning the Premier League and Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry was quoted speaking to Sky Sports that they needed 4 quality signings to win the title.
“Arsenal need to buy four players, they need that spine,
“They need a goalkeeper, they still need a centre-back, they still need a holding midfielder and, I’m afraid, they need a top, top-quality striker in order to win this league again.
“The best example for me today was Chelsea. They struggled last year and they were still competing to win the league. They now have [Thibaut] Courtois, [Nemanja] Matic, Cesc [Fabregas] and Diego Costa.
“For me that speaks volumes, and we saw it today. A team didn’t and a team did, and Chelsea are about to win the league.”
Checking onto what Henry actually stated, he is not far from the truth, in fact Arsenal do need 4 top signings to win the Premier League. They have been brilliant in the second half of the season and could have actually done more had they started the season as well as they are ending it.
They still have a chance of winning some silverware, they can retain the FA cup if they defeat Aston Villa that will be a good end to a season which could have been better.
Arsenal need to get a central defender and a world-class one, they cannot rely on Per Mertesacker next year and they do have the excellent Laurent Koscielny and the young Gabriel Paulista but they need some steel in the center of defence and that steel is also needed in midfield. Francis Coquelin might have done a brilliant job so far this season. but that is not enough to sustain a proper challenge for the title. They need someone to help the youngster out and not have to rely on the player. The likes of Sami Khedira and Mats Hummels, who have been linked with the team since the start of last season should ensure that the problem is solved.
The need for a good striker and a good goalkeeper as backup are important as well, Giroud might be doing the work but he still does not look like a 20 goal striker and Ospina has been excellent since he has become the Arsenal number one, but some doubts still remain about his ability and performance. Henry was spot on with his assessment over Arsenal and the lack of quality in their team. It will be interesting to see if Arsene does pay heed to this legend or stays as stubborn as he has been over the years regarding his transfer dealings.
