This is why it’s in Man Utd’s best interests to revive pursuit of this prolific 29-year-old target from 2018

Why Manchester United should go for Ciro Immobile in January

Manchester United have started the season encouragingly enough. They thrashed Frank Lampard’s Chelsea in their opening game, before drawing 1-1 with Wolves at the Molineux on Monday.

The Red Devils so far have eased supporters’ doubts after a relatively quiet transfer window by producing the attractive football that has delighted them in the past under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Existing first-teamers such as Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Andreas Pereira and Anthony Martial are being offered ever-more responsibility by Solskjaer while emerging stars such as Mason Greenwood and Axel Tuanzebe have established themselves as significant squad members.

Rashford and Martial are Solskjaer’s leading strikers this season and the duo have impressed with their pace, movement and clinical finishing until now.

Greenwood is waiting on the wings for his opportunity, ready to capitalise and stake a claim for a starting role. Alexis Sanchez is also building his match fitness to make himself available whenever the United manager calls upon.

However, Sanchez has not lived up to expectations since his move from Arsenal last January and United have been looking for a way to offload him. Inter Milan want to sign the Chilean, initially on loan, after bringing in Romelu Lukaku from United earlier in the summer.

Lukaku’s departure has already left a huge void in the United squad and should Sanchez follow the Belgian out of the club, Solskjaer will be left with a shortage of experienced forward players.

Back in April 2018, the Express claimed that United were interested in signing Lazio striker Ciro Immobile. However, Lazio were reluctant to sell their star striker and a move didn’t materialise. As United cannot sign a player until January, Solskjaer must prioritise the signing of Ciro Immobile then.

Immobile would be a tad different to Solskjaer’s philosophy of signing young, hungry talents at United as he is 29. But the Norwegian tactician must know that the 29-year-old has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in Serie A for the last couple of seasons.

The Italy international is a clever striker who is ruthless in front of goal. He isn’t just a goalscorer; Immobile is excellent at link-up play and likes to create opportunities for his teammates by supplying clever balls in and around the final third.

The ex-Torino man can play anywhere across a front line, but his excellent finishing means that he thrives when used as a traditional number 9.

In addition to his goalscoring ability, Immobile also possesses sound technique, works really hard and chases down the ball and presses opponents when not in possession.

Verdict

At 29, the Italian is operating in his prime and would give United a different dimension to their attack. All in all, he would be a fantastic addition if Solskjaer manages to get a deal over the line in January 2020.
